Exactly. Let us not be under any illusion that those who recently thrilled us with their exploits at the TDF did so on bananas and mineral water alone. I have competed at a very high level in this sport and I can attest to that alone. I think the UCI should be open and look at the problem in terms of the riders health not for any sporting "fraud".
Be that as it may. I may be wrong, and I don't want to cast aspersion unnecissarily, but I am quite sure that my heroes on the bike are on gear, and that in no way diminishes my love of the sport or the way I appreciate their riding.
The best riders would be at the top if no-one was using, or if everyone was using. The playing field is still level now, maybe artificially high, but still level.
Give the riders their due, racing in a multi-week tour at the pro-tour level is probably the toughest thing there is to do sporting wise, and the pressure on the riders to earn their salaries is enormous.
