I've gone through a variety of socks, and usually could find something to dislike about most of them - you'd think that by now, manufacters and designers would have worked the kinks out, but no. Some of the more expensive socks (thor-lo, exotic mesh patterns, whatever) worked fine for me, but I just don't have it in myself to spend $10 for a pair of socks. I decided that all I really needed was something fitted to the foot (like Joe said - elastic over the arch), low-rise/no-show (I like the style, YMMV), thicker on the sole (extra padding = good), and able to wash with regular clothes (a number of the more exotic socks need fabric softener, which I don't really like, so it just made my laundy more complex).

Short version: adidas low-rise, 3 pairs for $10 (or just buy a ton when they go on sale).
