sorry stang, all in fun! as a cyclist i get peeved when punk kids blast through stop signs, crosswalks and generally make asses of themselves. however punks being asses is nothing new and surely not limited to cycling - if what they are doing on their bikes can legitimately be called cycling!

we have at least a couple of cyclist deaths each year where i live due to drivers being inattentive or worse. unfortunately many motorists are completely oblivious to cyclists' presence on the shoulder, as they are generally gaping at our beautiful scenery. It is incumbent upon the cyclist to ride defensively, choose routes wisely, wear visible clothing and have both a front and rear light at night, taking those and other steps protect themselves from others.

despite the laws giving cyclists use of the road shoulder (nearly universal on non-controlled access highways), the responsibility of safety must fall squarely on the cyclist due to the consequences of even minor collisions with a vehicle. if only it were otherwise! the law can't protect you if you've become a hood ornament.
