When you say you're "going up" with the original exercise, that is like a curl. Assuming you are standing or sitting this means flexion of the arms at the elbow. WIth the hands facing each other, as you describe, you will pull a bit more with your brachioradialis which is not a bad thing, but just not a tirceps exercise. In fact, the tris relax during this motion to enable upper arm flexors to do their job!
