Kudos for getting back in shape. Everybody's different, of course, but a red face following strenuous exercise is not uncommon. Red is the color of blood loaded with oxygen. Since you're just starting to exercise again, your heart rate is probably going through the ceiling, even though you may not be running as fast as you did in the past. 30 minutes of running is enough to get anybody's heart pumping. As your conditioning comes back, it will take longer for you to get that flushed appearance. But when your heart rate maxes, you may still get it. I have heard comments like your friend's all my life. My base fitness is good, so it takes a while for it to show up, but I still get flushed.
