Running in place can be good if done vigorously. Keep in mind though, that your body is only exerting a fraction of the force of actually running, since you have the vertical component, but not the horizontal, which everyone seems to emphasize. =) If you're running in place, you migtht want to exaggerate it a bit.. think jumping rope.
Here's a variation, try running in place while shadowboxing. If you're not familiar with that term, ask. Try using some VERY light (2 lbs) weights or wrist/ankle weights and try shadowboxing/running in place. That should have some cardio/conditioning benefit.
