Default Introducttion, My Ride, & One Training Questions

Hey everyone,

I stumbled across this site, and I thought it was pretty cool. I just recently relocated from Northern California (Silicon Valley) to Northeastern Florida...MOUNTAINS to flats!

Here is my ride...a Trek Madone 5.2 SL Project One. I just upgraded the seat to a Selle Italia Gel Flight Titanium (love the seat) and the wheelset to a pair of Mavic Ksyrium SLs. The OEM Bontrager Lites are now used for my indoor trainer (CycleOps Fluid 2).

MY TRAINING QUESTION:

1) I try to ride 6 days each week, with 2 days of intense, interval work as follows:

Mon...Intervals, approx. 20-30 miles
Tue...Medium Distance + Medium Intesity approx. 30-40 miles
Wed...Long Ride + Light Intensity approx. 60-80 miles
Thur...Rest Day
Fri...Intervals, approx. 20-30 miles
Sat...Long Ride + Medium to High Intensity
Sun...Recovery Day, 20-30 miles low intensity

My first question relates to my Saturday ride. It is done on a group ride, and there are riders who usually take off from the group at about mile 10 and ride the next 40 miles at speeds between 23 and 28mph (flat roads with head and cross winds). I find that I can keep in the pace line and do some pulls until about the last 10 miles of the ride and then I just can't keep that pace anymore. For a large portion of the pace line ride, I am working above my Lactate Threshold just to keep up. So, is it just a matter of time with my above weekly workout before my body can more easily accomodate the Saturday ride or should I make some adjustments to my workout? Any idea approx. how much training time I will need to put in to reach my goal of more comfortably completing the 50 mile ride with an average speed above 20mph?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
