Max Bicycle Speed
Ok. I got myself a bicycle computer, its the wireless cateye micro. I use it on a off-road mtb my tire size is 2.1 inchs the computer is set for a tire size of 1.95", for some reason when I check my max speed after a ride it tells me my max speed was like 80kph, I was giving it all I got going down a hill and I thought I seen 65kph at max.
Well What I Would Like To Know Is, how fast a bike can really go, from pedaling. Theses speeds I am getting just seem to high.
Thx

I believe 80kph...
Some downhill racers can race at around 60mph or better on the straights. As for road racers I'm sure they can attain that speed or even higher.
Check this race out that happened last year it has roadies and mountain bike racers on the same course.

As for pedaling speed on the flats;
http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/...recordid=43641
He was drafting a motor vehicle though.
On many of the Pro road races you'll see these guys do 30-40mph on the flats...in the final sprint maybe even faster, depending on leg freshness.

has anyone seen that video of the guy who tried to break bicycle land speed record by riding down the side of a volcano in Japan? I forgot where I saw it, but he wiped out going super fast. I can't say how fast he was going, but he looked like a bullet going down that hill. Suprisingly he didn't die. His bike broke into a few pieces and he had a road rash from hell.

No, I haven't seen that one, but it'd be cool to...sounds insane too!

I don't believe the 80kph. It's clearly possible but unlikely that he has the skill to control a bike at nearly 50mph, considering he's just now getting a computer and probably not a very experienced rider. I have been riding for 10+ years and have never exceeded 45mph. Of course there weren't many hills in atlanta you could reach that speed on.
50mph in a 44x11 gear, likely the biggest on a mountain bike, is over 160rpm. I don't believe he's capable of that from his post. The computer is clearly miscalibrated. Set it up using the manual then repeat the ride.

Depending on what the terrain was like, it is possible, if it's a straight shot fire road I can see it happening, especially if he has a long travel type bike and doesn't worry about taking a spill...hehe
I've done 56 mph on a Mtn bike...downhill of course, I had a 44x11 (It was paved too).
Dial tone; I see your point though.

That guy gets whacked pretty hard. Maybe he should be on a better bike with a helmet that stays on his head!

I tried to reach that speed again on the same hill but the 80km musta been wrong (donno why it happened) I got like 67 or somthing... I like bombing downhill trough the woods and crap, this hill is paved but my bike got a Panaracer Pyro tire on the back (Big Nooby tire).
humm I had the wind against me the other day when I was testing it was behind me before but doubt I hit 80kph, it said 72kph the day after.
This is a steep hill about 1/2-1km long, about a 50 degree slope. I pedal fairly crazy going down most of it than sort of glide down the rest :P
I think the reading are fairly acurate maybe my computer got some interference somewhere, donno.
yo dialtone my computer is set up for a 1.95 tire and my front tire is a 2.1 would that matter much? dont know if I can ajust it, it gives me 2 options for tire sizes.

50 deg eh? Considering 45 deg is actually 100% slope, or 1:1, it must be REALLY REALLY steep.

I would venture a guess that there is no paved road in the world that is 50 degrees. No normal vehicle could come close to getting up that. The hills they do those crazy motorcycle climbs on are 55-60 degrees.

humm yeah I got high yesterday and messed up my calculations, it is a real steep hill though, cars get stuck on it during snowstorms sometimes.
my computer is set up for a 1.95 tire and my front tire is a 2.1 would that change anything? Idont think I can ajust it, it gives me 2 options for tire sizes.

wireless cateye micro. I'll test my speed with the wind behind me a little but I think the 70+ and 82? readings were some glitch, in the manual it says it can get interferance from certain things and I got the 2 devices like as far away as sugested so maybe it got a stronger signal from somewhere else ? lol no clue! OK I am going to go test this again today!

How old is the computer? Some of the older versions were having problems with certain types of street lights and local electrical wires too. The newer models (MC100W) have supposedly cured this though.
Use the setting for the 2.1 tire, especially if that's the wheel with the magnet. The setting should be: 2068 (26x2.1)
