Conyers GA 1996 Olympic mountain bike course
I just did a race at this course, which is 12 miles south of atanta. If any of you are into xc I recomend checking it out. The first 4 miles of the course are fast with short steep climbs, then you get to bomb down some nice twisting technical descents. After you cross the road to the second half of the course, you are riding on an ocean of solid granite. No lie, this side of the course is an ass kicker, with straight ups and straight downs, with really no time to recover on a flat. I had been hearing from a lot of people that it was a tough course, and after reaching the second half of the course, you could see people dying and pushing bikes rather than riding them, but all in all it was a fun course.

How was the heat? I remember a lot of competitors were bonking early do to the extreme heat and humidity in '96. Sounds cool though, must have been a blast.

heat was only bad in the open areas when riding on the granite rock, since it was open and no trees. I went into shock on the first lap but recovered and finished my three laps. It really is a brutal course

Way to go!! Aren't you usually a DH guy too!!? That's pretty awesome that you raced the XC and I'm sure kicked some tail while you were at it.

yeah I normally race DH and DS only, but our club team only has about six members that actually go to the collegiate events, so I am having to suck it up and do all the events for our team to qualify for nationals.

I bet you could pick it up...
If you know somebody that has a a bike with hand brakes, borrow it. Sit on it and use your feet to "walk" the bike along. When you have enough speed, lift your feet up just a tad from the ground and glide a bit. Practice this until you can go further and further. Once you get a little confidence try putting your feet on the pedals and glide. Practice and get the feel of how the bike feels underneath you, then try to pedal. Also if you can find a gradually sloping hill, try using that to help with getting the bike going without having to pedal. And remember where a helmet and gloves...maybe knee pads if you have em too. Hope this helps a bit. You never to old to learn to ride a bike.
