I think the key here is that cyclists need to respect the laws governing their use of the road as do motorists. There are certainly a**holes on either side of this issue, but if everyone played by the rules, there would be far less complaints from both sides

I agree with toonces' remarks. All too often, at least around here in the burbs of Cleveland, bikers do not obey all the traffic laws. If you are riding in the street you need to obey stop signs, red lights, etc. I personnelly can't stand when four or five bikers are on a street and not single file. They ride spread out and back up traffic on that road until on-coming traffic clears for a much wider pass.

Good points above - also, I can think of better ways to suicide than taking a bike on US 41 in Atlanta. But as long as it's not a limited-access highway, then bikes have the same rights and responsibilities as other vehicles.

pliny...I agree/know they have the same rights and responsibilities as other vehicles on the roadway. My point is they choose not to obey all of the traffic laws as the other vehicles do, thus causing unsafe conditions for those other vehicles. And, IMO, many of them on the road act as if the road is theirs and we are an inconvenience to them.

seriously the only real gripe i have about bike riders is the blatant disregard of traffic laws they seem to disregard because theyre on a bike. but what bugs me also is the bike riders whine around when things dont go in there favor but seem to think theyre exempt from traffic laws. go figure!

no one makes me bleed my own blood!
sorry stang, all in fun! as a cyclist i get peeved when punk kids blast through stop signs, crosswalks and generally make asses of themselves. however punks being asses is nothing new and surely not limited to cycling - if what they are doing on their bikes can legitimately be called cycling!
we have at least a couple of cyclist deaths each year where i live due to drivers being inattentive or worse. unfortunately many motorists are completely oblivious to cyclists' presence on the shoulder, as they are generally gaping at our beautiful scenery. It is incumbent upon the cyclist to ride defensively, choose routes wisely, wear visible clothing and have both a front and rear light at night, taking those and other steps protect themselves from others.
despite the laws giving cyclists use of the road shoulder (nearly universal on non-controlled access highways), the responsibility of safety must fall squarely on the cyclist due to the consequences of even minor collisions with a vehicle. if only it were otherwise! the law can't protect you if you've become a hood ornament.

i yell at people as i pass them all the time who are fucking around on their phone as they drive 10 mph below the speed limit. I make it a point to slow down just enough to ride beside them, roll my windows down and yell at them to get off the fucking phone and drive. I know thats illegal in some states to talk while driving, i wish it were in all states, at least require a headset, handsfree or something. Fuckers now a days are texting and emailing as they drive. I see it every day.
That alone would be enough for me to never ever ride my bike anywhere around a city or even a busy road. I say those who do are absolutely an inconvenience to society simply because society, the ones on their phones not paying attention, are the majority.
