Becoming a Personal Trainer
Hi everyone.
I am from toronto and am looking for some help!
I want to be a personal trainer, and was looking into the Fitness and Health Promotion program at Humber College. Before i apply, or get into anything, i was just wondering if this is an Ok way of getting my certificate( will gyms accept it, etc.) and also, what (honestly) are the average yearly wages. I don't want to say i'm JUST in it for the money, but if there is no money involved.....then i won;t get into it.
I would appreciate all of your help!
Thanks
Carly

Re: Becoming a Personal Trainer
This isnt necessarily what ALL clubs will accept, but to apply to the Ballys at 400 and interchange(AMC plaza off the 400 in woodbridge), this is what they ask for:
------------------------------------------------
Looking for motivated individuals with knowledge in physical fitness and exercise programs for full and part time personal training positions. A company-recognized personal training certification or a four-year college degree in a fitness-related field must be obtained within 90 days of employment. Experience and nutrition knowledge preferred. Competitive compensation package and opportunities for advancement.
------------------------------------------------
Soooo, thats what theyre looking for. im sure they would accept other things, and it doesnt seem to specify what "A company-recognized personal training certification" is.
I would advise you call the club, or any club, and get their opinion.
After all, they're your potential future employers. Not only would you get first hand information from someone responsible for hiring personal trainers, but also, by getting in contact with someone at the top, you could be setting yourself up for a part time job while your studying, or a coop placement ahead of time.
The interchange Bally's phone number is (905) 850-4402,
The personal training director is Andrew Tripp, and the GM is Sonia Ricotti.
They could probably offer some pretty decent help.

Re: Becoming a Personal Trainer
OR, get the club nearest you, I would suggest going to a well established club, something like a Good Life or a Bally, those are the 2 bigger ones in ontario.
They would have the most information available.
there are atleast 6 ballys in TO, and I believe i've seen 5 good lifes, so theyre should be plenty of options, maybe you can find something convenient to the humber area.

Re: Becoming a Personal Trainer
You have to be certified through a fitness organization, like ACE, ACSM, CSCS, NCSF. Clubs generally accept your qualifications easier (degree, ect) when you are certified

Re: Becoming a Personal Trainer
The pay depends on clients For example 5 a day would get you around $150 to $250 a day Agian it depends on where you train.

Re: Becoming a Personal Trainer
if i decided that the personal training isn't making enough money for me, are there other related jobs i can do, like...at the same time teach a cardio class..like spinning or something? And how exactly does that pay work...does the gym pay you a set amount......or do you only make whatever clients pay...or is it a combo of both???
Sorry for all the questions..i just have to make sure i know what i am getting into

Re: Becoming a Personal Trainer
I hear they make pretty good money, but you have to work your way up. Like at the gym when "level 1" lessons are like $70, and the "level 5" are like $90. Well, thats here, but i guess you just have to work your way up. I doubt another source of income would be necessary, but maybe u could sell supps, or become a nutritionist on the side? Just a thought.

Re: Becoming a Personal Trainer
I hear fluffing pays good.....just kidding. You have to talk to the club you want to work at. Each club is different. The smaller clubs have different opportunitites than the bigger established ones. You really ahve to do your own searching. Good Luck and welcme to the Board!

Re: Becoming a Personal Trainer
no problem, i hope you find what you need. Go and talk to some trainers/owners at a gym and see what they have to say as well. It wouldn't hurt to ask.
