Hi, I'm 18, and an amputee. This happened in 2002 and I some what started lifting like a year ago but just got lazy. Being an amputee I haven't been able to get out much and the laziness factor kind of messes things up... I'm pretty much a tub of lard now and was hoping you guys could help me with properly strengthening and eating right. I'm 5' 3" and am about 160 (>_<)

Welcome JinSan!
Sorry to hear of your mis-fortune but glad you're here! Which limb has been amputated?

I'm in a wheelchair myself, so there's no excuse for being lazy. I did gain a lot of weight initally though because i ate like I did when I wasn't in the cahir, and playing football, skiiing, running etc.. and simply didn't expend enough calories. That's part of the reason that I went into exercise physiology, along with the fact that my doctors always tried to talk technically and above my understanding at the time. Now we have "coversations" Anyway, welcome aboard and let me know if you have any questions, I have a unique perspective on disabilities and weightlifting.
Old Fart, just so you know, my penchant for the big word usage is likely to get worse, I am starting a PhD program in Motor Development this fall. lol I can't stop!
ADV,

Not one person took a stab at the muscle that crossed 5 joints question I posted before I went to New Orleans, so i'm a little jaded.
How about this one:
What's the longest muscle in the body?
ADV,
I don't think you're eligible, lol

Come on! Of course it's the Sartorius.
Actually I googled it but figured it was one of the thigh muscles before I googled.

Comes from the Latin "sartor" or the "tailor's muscle" because of the usage in the cross-legged position they used to sit in. Very nice, though I am disappointed you went so fast to the Google.

I remember some of the first bodybuilding contests I went to and seeing some of the guys who had this muscle crossing their thigh, very visible on some of them. I was curious which muscle it was, so I looked it up. This was a few years back so forgive my elderly feeble-mindedness.

When I was in school, I spent a fair amount of time pondering on how one could develop that muscle. From a isolation standpoint as well as during compoud liftrs (adjusting foot position).
We also tackled developing the T4 are of the trapezius. Of course scapular depression would be involved, but what else could someone do?
Any ideas?
I ahve a few exercises for both, but what do you guys think?

http://www.exrx.net/Muscles/Sartorius.html
Cross-legged low cable cable manuever, such that the leg remains relatively straight, and an ankle cuff is used. It's a hip and knee flexor, so keep that in mind with positioning.
http://www.exrx.net/Muscles/TrapeziusLower.html
Shoulder retraction, just like using a row machine, except the arms remain straight and do not flex at the elbow. The object is the "adduct" the scapula toward the spine. This muscle is worked as an ancillary in many overhead motions like the lat pull as well, and can be targeted in the first movement of that exercise, the depression of the scapula, without completing the motion itself.
People will look at you funny when your range of motion is about 3-4 inches with straight arms, but there's a lot of things people don't understand, like the neck harness and short range in a bench press for the serratus.

Hey fart, witht he ecpetion of gracias and TFL I make a strong effort to target those muscles in each program I design.
I leave out the TFL, b/c I have only ever heard of one person with a loose TFL. She is a runner, and actually has some seirous pain b/c of it. Otherwise, the TFL is too dam tight to worry about training. Stretch it often, every single day atleast once.
Painless. the sartorius exercise you described was one I had actualy attmepted before. The sacapr etraction is a good one, but depression is more important in my opininon. As such, I used to do partial range pulldowns behind the neck. Basically load up the machine, and only depress the shoulder baldes. Keep the arms straight. Hits T4 great.
Behind the back barbell shrugs are also a good exercise for T4, well thats what Dorian says anyways

Dorian needs to look at that muscle diagram. As for the shoulder retraction, the reason it that is is able to target that area is because the fibers are pennated in a diagonal position not vertically, so they still work well in horizontal motions, despite the fact that the other mid portions of the trap are working as well, they work synergistically.
