Thanks for the welcomes. You guys are all great! Yes, taking a break from the trainer It was great when my daughter was home sick last week. I haven't been out on the bike much since I've been focused on a couple running races coming up. I'm doing the Rock and Roll Half over Labor day. It should be great fun.

Welcome NFMS

Youv'e made some great progress in only 3 months. Is it possible to enter a show without doing steroids? Absolutely. Is it possible to win? Maybe, depends on the show, but probably not at a national level, except a drug tested contest.

Here's a link to a natural bodybuilding organization: INBA.

BTW, I hope you've quit smoking, also.

Exclamation Got no time to lose

Let me start off b saying that I am a mother of two.My youngest is 7 and oldest will be 9 September 11. They are both active girls with an even more active father. He is a firefighter and is one of the top competitors in the Firefighter Combat Challenge. (world comp. will be in Deerfield Beach Nov.1-7th. And televised on ESPN)
The delima is I need to lose no less than 20 lbs in about 10 weeks. I am 5'9 and about 175 lbs. Before kids I was 128lbs. I dont want to be that skinny again because I had no muscle. I do have more muscle now because I do waight train and do cardio, however not as consistant and as intense as I should. I need to be extreme and stay motivated for 10 weeks. So my diet has to be clean and extrme also. Can I live off of protein shakes and chicken with rice and oatmeal while doing cardio 2xs a day with weights every other day?
Part of me has been on and off for so long that I am afraid of trying and not getting to my goal. My husband is so supportive and tries to help out but I find that I get irritable when he suggests that I should have a protein shake instead of chicken soup at 9pm when I get home from work.
I know that if I were consistant with my workouts and nutrition I would not be in this mess, but here I am in this mess with 10 weeks till we get to Florida. Just me and my honey...no kids...I want to feel and be as hot as Im told I am.
Dont be too hard on me with your responses.

WELCOME TO THE FORUMS, STEPH!

When I competed in my first bodybuilding contest, I went from 191 pounds to 173 pounds in about 6 weeks. I lost some muscle in the process, also, but mainly fat. My diet consisted of lean meat, mainly chicken breasts or dry tuna, and complex, low-glycemic carbs. Only water, tea or skim milk to drink and I cut out the skim milk toward the end. Virtually no fat. This was about 13 years ago, diets have changed since then, but it worked for me at the time. Of course, I gained it all back afterwards becuase you can stay on any extreme diet for very long. In any event, if you want to, you can lose the weight in that amount of time. It just calls for an extreme effort. The challenge will be to permanently alter your eating and workout habits to keep the weight off.

For workouts, I was working out with weights 6 days a week and doing cardio twice a day; once in the morning and once after my weight training.

You can do it if you're willing to put your mind to it. I would try to stick to solid food if you can, even instead of protein shakes.

Check this post out: Glycemic Index. Also check out the other stickies in the Nutrition and Weight Loss Section.

just wondering, old fart, doesn't six times a week seriously overtrain you? or was that what you were going for?

No, it didn't. What it did, combined with the cardio was burn some serious fat off. Of course, my recovery was quicker in those days and I was getting plenty of rest. And a lot of low-glycemic carbs for fuel and a lot of protein to maintain muscle mass.

I was working out 5 or 6 days a week well into my forties. Not doing cardio each day, though.

Now it's 3 to 4 days a week.

i see. i'm guessing then it was single-area workout (one body area per day) rather than a full body? what are the advantages to doing a fullbody workout as opposed to this type of concentrated effort, anyway?

I was working each muscle group twice a week: chest/tris/shoulders; legs; back/bi's - the classic push/pull split. Now I do each muscle group once a week, currently: chest/tri's; legs/shoulders; back/bis.

I get more out of working the individual muscle groups than I do a full body workout. With a full body workout, I feel that, for me, it;s more a test of endurance than working each muscle to it's fullest. So I split it up. That way I can concentrate more fully on each muscle group and have plenty of time to recuperate before my next workout.

Adonis, on the other hand, swears by the full body workout.

Try them both and see which works best for you.

hmm i guess i shall be PM-ing adonis soon then! what do you think, though, about say doing a 6-7 week program of split-muscle workout (which is what i do now, off manfred_man's program he set for me), taking a week off, and then alternating with 3-4 weeks of fullbody workout? is there a "shock" effect there?

Thank for the info ,I currently have my coffee in the morning and hen try to stick to water or tea during the day.The stikler is I enjoy a glass of wine every few days to wind down when I get home.I have tried some of the ephedra free products but they make me sick and give me major headaches! I found some orriginal formula online.I am trying to keep as much muscle as I can but know that with cardio 2x's a day that losing mucsle is bound to happen.I dont eat fish (it also makes me sick) so chicken and even canned chicken is my main source of protien.
For my weights, should I go heavy with low reps or light with high reps?If I do 6 days a week then glutamin is a must? Ive tried creatine and gaind big time! Thanks again, off to ride the bike!!

A very fit or advanced weight lifter can do a 6 day split no problem and it gets each body part twice per week with 2 per day plus an ab, obl or butt, 3-4 sets of 8-12 is your aim if you want bulk.
A muscle per day is fine too but once your body masters that you need to progress further with 6 days splitting, super sets, tri sets, pyramids........you can change exercises, sets and reps, and increase weight for only so long before you need to apply these other ideas.

Any rep range will work if you are trying to blunk, how ever the rep range of 8-12 will provid non-functional hypertrophy. (water in muscle not increased muscles fiber size.\). Where as a lower rep range will provide strenght and hypertrophy!
