Hello all! I've been training very hard for the last 3 years. Was 5'8 275lbs. and approx 30% BF when I begain weight training, and have been in the gym 5-6 days a week pretty consistantly since that time. Was down to 209lbs with 12% BF and at that point decided to add mass. Am currently 228lbs with 16% BF. I have no trouble gaining muscle, but dropping BF is a bit of a mystery. The thing that has worked best in the past is going ultra-low carb, but I am very lathargic in the gym and tend to lose muscle mass. I would like to try and compete next year, but want to give dieting a "test run" this fall before the holidays. I would appreciate any pointers from the "old pros" out there! Thanks!

do a search on dieting or pre contest diet, there are a few threads here you can find with some pre contest ideas..........I am pretty sure.

Welcome, Duke!
I haven't competed in about 12-13 years so the thinking is probably different now than it was then but we followed a low fat diet pre-contest. Starting about 8 weeks out, we'd cut our fat to as close to zero as we could. We'd keep our protein intake high and our carb intake high but only low-glycemic carbs.
Here's a link to info on glycemic levels: http://www.extremefitness.com/forum/t29580.html

I havn't read most of the posts yet, but I'm guessing I'm among the youngest here. I'm an 18 year old asian kid, 5"10" 150 lbs. trying to gain some mass, mostly working out at home with a trip to the school gym once or twice a week. Trying to build up my chest actually, it's where I lack the most...and abs. I hate doing abs.

Welcome. langjaikenny
No, your not the youngest but you are amoung the youngest. There are some very knowledgeable young guys here: BBABB and Killa_Z, just to mention two of them.
I'm sure you'll get some good advice here. Feel free to start a new thread with some specifics on your diet and current workout regime and we'll be glad to throw some information your wway. I guarantee at least some of it will be helpful.
In the meantime, check out the sticky's in the Nutrition area for guides on eating to gain mass and check out the sticky's in this area for some threads on different workout programs.

New Old Guy
Greetings all, I too am new to your site after several reviews. I am in my 40's and attempting a long dormant comeback.
Many inches to loose from the waist via diet and exercise and muscle to rebuild. Difficult at my age but I am off none the less.
Many of the post I have read have been helpful, just very...varied. I am looking for some advice from a member/user in my age range to share some secrets.
Thanks

Welcome Aircru!
Unfortunately, there are no secrets. Just hard work and proper diet.
I think this is a great article about nutrition: 7 Secrets. If you want other reading by John Beraldi, here's his web site: John Beraldi.
Check out these workouts:
Upper/Lower Split
3 Day Total Body
3 Day Beginner's Workout
Do some cardio along with your weight training, at least 20-30 minutes 3 times a week.

Hey everybody! I feel like such an internet noob, I came across this site accidentally today and have spent the last 3 hours of my day glued to EF. I love this place!
Anyways, I am 32 6'2", 203 lbs. I was always the skinny kid in school, you know, the one that coach would pick to help him 'ref' when we had wrestling day in PE? At 16 I weighed almost 100 pounds and by 21 I was around 135. My pop used to say that if I took a deep breath I'd disappear. My main goal in life was to be HUGE...actually it still is. For 13 years it seemed that I had tried everything with nothing to show for it.
About 2 years ago, my boss and now best friend and workout buddy said 2 things that changed my life:
#1 It isn't the amount of weight you can lift, it's how you look.
#2 You need food to grow.
Boy that sounds so stupid, but they were the things I needed to hear. I stopped trying to kill myself at the gym and ate every three hours and gained 35 lbs of muscle in 3 months.
I workout 5 days/week (1 bodypart each except calves and abs) and still kill myself but it takes more reps (around 8-12) and I go until failure every time.
Anyways, that's me. I am married, no kids for 61/2 more months and I love to train. I still think I am skinny and still want to be huge.
Thanks to all of you who keep this site up.
