My top four woud be
1. AST Sports Science Ny-Tro-Pro 40. A meal replacement loaded with vitamins, glutamine, complex carbs, NAC, and 40 grams of protein.
2. Beverly International Mucscle Provider protein.
3. Creatine - There are varying opinions on which one you should take. There are many good ones. Any Beverly International, AST Sports Science, Optimum Nutrition, or Parrillo creatine would be great.
4. Glutamine or a post-workout shake. This is your most important time to take in food or supplements. Look for something with complex carbs, glutamine and more.

You should go check out the "Supplements Discussion" forum. And I second the_quiet_guy's recommended link.

It's not an either/or situation. They do two different things.
Protein helps rebuild the muscles torn down during your weight training. It is necessary for muscle recovery and growth. It's essential that you take in the necessary amount of protein, ideally 1 gram per pound of body weight.
Creatine is a nutrient that is found naturally in our bodies. The main effect of creatine is to provide more energy to the muscles during workouts (see this article for more info: Creatine).
Creatine is not necessary for muscle growth, protein is. At a minimum, chose a good whey protein powder.

the fart has... spoken!
good to hear from you again, elysium!
the link for creatine is an excellent primer, and a must-read! absolutely agree that if there's anything you really should get, it's whey protein powder... but make sure you're taking you multi-vitamins!
as well, check out the Supplements Forum as Upheaval recommends.

ditto to what Fart said. Protein and creatine do different things. I also agree with Manfred in that if you must choose one, you should choose a good whey protein powder. Good luck.
