yup, I do for about 20 mins...low intesity walking between 3.8-4mph depending on how I feel. just enought to break a sweat but not too much where I can't carry on a conversation....First thing in the morning on an empty stomach is best but after weights is the next best thing.

After lifting is good for purging the lactic acid from your muscles. <Insert Painless' scientific explantation here>

LOL... Painless is good with words, isn't he! I usually do star jumps and things like that when going out for a run or walk is impractical immediately after a workout. I also find that a very brief cardio before a workout is very good for getting blood to your muscles and getting you psychologically prepared for doing some heavy lifting. One thing I never do is a long run on a workout day; I used to do 45mins - 1hr runs with one of my mates on the same day as a workout, and it killed me, so never again will I be so stupid!
Does anyone else do star jumps/push-ups/skipping or things like that instead of jogging or walking to warm down? D

nope, I usually start post-workout nutrition and recovery protocols, and save cardio for my off days.

You talk to hard core BBer's and they say no way to do doing cardio after lifting...that it can be catabolic. I usually drink a protein shake as I do my cardio...and it's always low intensity on an elliptical.

I always wait till after a wee bit of cardio before I down some quality whey protein and then rest for a bit. Isn't it a bad idea to consume food or drink whilst exercising? I always thought that it was... D

like my warmup, i'll usually do one of the following:
- 5 minutes on stationary bike (low intensity)
- 5 minutes on ellyptical (low intensity)
- 2-3 minutes skipping rope
then, i'll grab my shake & hit the showers...
as far as drinking while exercising, it isn't a bad idea, per se...
during the workout, sip your shake throughout...
for the cardio warmdown, dilute what you have left with water and drink a mouthful every minute or so...

Ah ok! I read somewhere once that drinking a protein shake before a workout was more beneficial than drinking it after, but I never thought that drinking a shake during a workout would help, seeing that you're supposed to wait for at least one hour after a meal before doing any exercising.
I always drink water for hydration and perhaps eat bits of banana or other high energy foods during a workout, but I would never normally touch a protein shake until after warming down and resting. If there is no harm in drinking a shake whilst warming down, does this have any advantages over drinking a shake after a strenuous workout or is it purely a matter of personal preference?
Cheers again, M! D

this mostly applies to those who need increased protein intake due to fitness goals (ie. weightgain/musclegain)
general rule of thumb is to have a shake 45-60 minutes prior to workout, sip water throughout your workout, and have another shake 20-30 minutes after workout (that includes your warmdown).
keep in mind, drinking a shake after the workout is different from drinking one during warmdown... during warmdown, sip, don't drink... or take half a mouthful rather than a cupful...

Whey protein question...
So you are not supposed to tank the whey protein, you are supposed to take sips. I've been doing it all wrong. I drink it after a workout only, not before.

I'm the same, but I get bigger by drinking protein afterwards, so I'm not too bothered.

I do preworkout cardio, and it helps to get your heart pumping. I've lifted much heavier with preworkout cardio rather than a postworkout. I do seated stationary bike for 20 minutes, 15 min. are high intensity. An alternate is a 15 min 2.5 mile run on the treadmill, with half mile warm up. Neither of these will burn you out, just get you pumping. Do your warm up lifting routine, cardio, and then workout. I swear that this works so much better. If it starts to feel too routine throw a row machine cardio workout in there, or break it up; 10 min bike, 10 min row. This keeps your heart rate up and the high levels of oxygen are delivered to your muscles at the start of your lifting. Remember it takes almost 20-30 minutes to bring your oxygen levels down after an intense cardio workout. So, utilize that oxygen and hit the weights heavy for 20 minutes.

It's short for cardiovascular, which is a mumbojumbo of latin/greek words meaning heart (cardio) and vessels/arteries (vascular). When we talk about cardio, we usually mean cardiovascular exercise, which is exercise that gets your heart pumping! It also has something to do with the respiratory system, which is your lungs and their function of oxygenating the blood etc. If you're really fit, your heart will beat slower, because your blood carries more oxygen than an unfit person. This is very simplistic, but keep in mind I am a drummer.
I'm sure Manfred can elaborate on this, but my sister is a doctor and I asked her for the lowdown! (Ah crap...I just gave away my secret... ) D

yes it can make you live longer by having a healthier heart but in relation to Bodybuilding and Strength Training, cardio is usually used for burning fat
