First of all, squat, always squat. Make sure to keep your back and torso up and straight.
But if you want to get a good burn on your outer quad at the end of a workout, try this--I think they're called iso hack squats, but I could be wrong. Put the barbell on the floor, with less weight than you'd think, and stand in front of it with the bar touching the backs of your calves/heels. Then go down into into a regular squat move, thigh parallel, and pick up the bar just a few inches off the ground. Hold it there for 45 seconds to a minute. I don't think I'd make this a central part of leg day, but you get a great pump and that dizzy feeling of a good rush.
