Don't ever use those. I've seen this guy who uses those, in addition with gloves with straps all the way to his wrists doing heavy DLs for 8+ reps (with weights he can only handled barehanded for 3 reps at most. Baaaad idea. I tried to tell him politely but didn't try to give a lecture either. He's a good guy, diligent in his workout, but that's such a waste of effort (not to mention the spinal compression he's getting into.)
Wrist strenght will never develop like that. Never.
Use straps only for the heaviest reps. You still need to grip hard with them so it's just an addition. With those hooks however, it's hard to grip, and if you have a weak wrip, the barbell will be basically hanging from the hook, pulling on your wrists. That's bad juju waiting to happen, man.
Long story short: don't use that shit. DL barehand, no gloves and only with straps for the heaviest loads (or on the days when you want to squeeze one or two more reps, not 8 or 9!!!).
I don't hate the guy for doing that, but I hate that he does so, and I hate even more the gym staff who sees him and tells him "looking good dawg" rather than explaining to him that this shit ain't good at all!!!

IMO those are actuallt good for isolation movement and cable work. eg cable biceps curl, lats pull down etc, I have been trying to get those but i cant seems to find it. Of course compound movements are best done with no support for maximum benifit.

I forgot one, the straps above reminded me: people who wear weight belts for everything. Nothing says back support like doing alternating DB curls with a weight belt on!

haha...
I have a belt but it's collecting dust. I think I might have used it 3 times in the past 2 years and those were only on those rare occassions when I try for a personal best deadlift.

The thing that pisses me off most in the gym is....
Dickheads who only start training 1 month before summer. they do a cycle. And they stop training after summer.

GR8!!! lets see:
Jan 1: the resolution-ers (seasonal people in general): they hog everything for 1 month...maybe...some you don't see after the first day.
the dude with skinny legs telling me that 3 plates on the leg press machine is too much, his "advice" is that I take off 1 because he tried it with two and that was hard for him......My reply: actually I'm at 4 plates but I'm still new to this.
people that hog the machines EVERYDAY; have been going to the gym for over a year and STILL look the same way they did when they started.
like others have said already......but this should be punishable by death....talking on ur cell whilst sitting on a machine that others are waiting to use....MOVE!!!!!
people with no towel, too much sweat and no intention to wipe off the machine that they used.
wo/men in the gym telling me I should not weight train because I'm gonna look like a man.....you know the ones that look at you funny when you go for the 30lb/45 db to do shoulder/bench press...just want to scream at them, go do some F***N research before you come spewing that garbage to me....
women that go to the gym not to work out to socialize....I say women because I am one and I feel that it demeans us......
FINALLY the dude that walks in the gym ready to work out with his shades and headband on ...wtf? seriously dude...
the random crazy people I can appreciate.....

I hate the arrogance in the gym. The main reason is the guys who you could see having the right to be arrogant aren't the ones who are. The big guys who have the right form, are huge and obviously know what they're doing are the quiet ones who just do their thing. The arrogant ones are usually the young guys who have a bit of definition, designer workout clothes and just do a few exercises that will impress their friends.

The thing that really pisses me off is seeing people going down about 5 inches doing heavy squats. I saw that in my high school weight room and I'm just thinkin, "Dude, your penis won't get any smaller if you do a proper squat." I can't think of any other reason for them to squat so heavy and so improperly than just to boost their egos.
The thing that annoys me even more is that those same guys when their done squatting their 4 45 lb plates on each side of the bar, they don't even take the plates off.
Putting plates back wrong
Putting dumbbells back on the rack in the wrong order (a 40 lb dumbbell hanging out with the 15 lb dumbbells.... how?)
Haven't really ever seen this happen but I could see myself getting annoyed: when people keep throwing on 10 lb plates for any reason. Whenever I'm in the freeweight room, there always seems to be a shortage of 10 lb plates. I try to use bigger plates when I go up in weight, so instead of using 3 10's on each side, I use a 25 and a 5. I didn't do this when I first started lifting but I realized that hogging all the plates would be annoying.
That's all I can think of.

Yeah, some of these people make me want to go Charles Bronson vigilante on them...most of the reason I train at home nowadays but my most hated are:
1. Only having 1 or 2 squat stations in the gym
2. The guys who have to fucking do their bicep curls at the squat rack so they could use the olympic bar and look cool. The whole time there's like 3 real men waiting to squat and they can't even bother trying to work in because the dumbass is only curling 65 pounds anyways and it's too much plate switching.
3. The guys who do their whole workout on the cable crossover and then act like they're doing you a favor when they "let" you work in for your 2 sets of flyes
4. The girl with the absolutely banging body but the "not-so-much" face....this really shouldn't bother me but it's just disappointing.
5. Not taking the 45's off the bench press because you assume that there's absolutely no way that a female or a beginner may walk in to the weightroom and have trouble removing those plates.
6. The guys who smoke outside the front door of the gym....WTF??

me and my wife were working out and some dude comes over in tight ass jeans, a loose t-shirt with the sleeves cut off and dark shades, does three cable pull-downs grunting and then walks off to do calf raises, does one he was done. what a tool! me and my wife just looked at one another, rolled our eyes and snickered and then went back to what we were doing. He looked totally ridiculous.

For isolation work? For bicep curls? ?For lat pull downs???? You got to be kidding me.
Forget isolation. Ditch the bicep curls and lat pull downs. Chin ups, chin ups and chin ups until the cows come home. And barbell rows, barbell rows and more barbell rows... specially with changing hand orientation (both pronated and supinated).
That will train your biceps, back and forearms better than that isolation crap.
Grip is everything. Grip is king. Grip is the key to big guns and actual strenght.
I spent years doing that isolation shit, and that crap is useless as a primary means of exercise. I ditched all that in favor of barbell rows and chin ups (weighted chin ups, chin ups with uneven grips, or chin ups where you grab towels or ropes instead of the handles). No gloves, no straps.
Guess what happened? I gained more back size in 10 months than in all the years of doing that isolation crap - I didn't even change my diet. It was all in the exercises I chosed to use. The only time to use a strap is when you are really banging the reps (weighted chin ups or near your max deadlift).
The only other time I use straps is when I'm doing v-handle seated rows... and only when I'm using twice my weight (turning it more into a seated deadlift than an actual row.)
But for isolation? For lat pull downs? For bicep curls? Don't make that mistake. I cannot in good conscience go on without telling this to you (or anyone else). As a matter of fact, using those things all the time is a sure way to overload your ligaments (specially at the elbow). Major muscular imbalance and a one-way ticket to tendonitis town.
There is almost no reason to use hooks, straps or that crap in compound movements - there are exceptions. But for isolation work? Heck no. What's the freaking point of getting a couple of extra bicep reps if you have a weak grip that can't naturally handle the load?
Develop a strong grip by not using those clutches, man. As a matter of fact, don't even use gloves.
Seriously. If you do this, you are going to sooooo thank me for this in years to come. Seriously bro.

This reminds me of another thing I hate:
Guys wearing their belt all the time? They wear the damned thing when doing bicep curls, leg curls, lat pull downs, wrist curls. Jesus Christ riding a pony, they must also wear that thing when they are taking a dump.
That's one retarded way to kill their backs.

i will 2nd the grip is everything comment. it (grip) strength has been highly neglected amongst some lifters. i take pride in knowing every thing i lift, its without straps! i will admit to wearing gloves just do to the fact at how freaking painfull some calluses has the potential to become. as far as caulouses go, ive found a good way to deal with them. those new cheese grater looking things they sale for calluses in the nail clipper sections of stores.
in the past from lifting for over 20 years majority without gloves and daily activities of life have made some huge painfull calluses in the past. i file them down once a month now and my hands havent hurt since!

In general, I don't like people who are not courteous or mindful of others around them. Examples include:
1. Not cleaning up after themselves (putting back their weights). There's a place for everything and everything should be in it's place.
2. Dropping and/or throwing the weights around. I'm particularly referring to the guys who purposely slam the dumbbells to the floor after each set of Dumbbell Bench or Incline Press.
3. People who perform their dumbbell exercises directly in front of the dumbbell rack. Please take a few steps away from the rack before performing your Curls, Shrugs, or Raises. That way, people don't have to wait for you to finish your set in order to grab or put back their dumbbells.
4. People who abuse the equipment in the gym. Squat racks are not for Curling, and cardio machines are not for talking on the phone.
5. If people are already occupying a space in front of a mirror, don't workout in front of them. Go find another open area.
6. If you're someone whose waiting for a machine/bench/rack because someone else is already using it, don't stand next to them silently waiting for them to finish. Make your purpose known to them by politely asking them after they finish a set how many sets they have left and if you can use the equipment after them, or if you can work in with them.

Man, this does not get mentioned enough and it CONSTANTLY cheeses me off. It's not just vanity (though at least part of it is) - the mirrors are there so you can get a visual check on form and proper contraction.

Agreed. It's not entirely vanity, just complete concentration and focus on the working muscle groups, which helps with a mirror.
The worst case scenario is a combination of #3 and #5. Say for example you're doing Seated Dumbbell Overhead Press and the seat is in front of the dumbbell rack. Then all of a sudden a big butt pops up in front of your face, blocking your view in the mirror because some guy doesn't have the common courtesy to think ahead of time that someone else was already working out in that same vicinity, at around butt-level.
It's just really distracting when you're already pumping out a set of reps, then in the middle of it someone else blocks your view.
