Mass vs Gas, dilemma of a skinny guy
Well, I'm finally ready to get back to training---really ready this time. My recovery took much longer than I ever expected, and am still occasionally having trouble with carpal tunnel symptoms, but it'll either go away in time or not.. either way, it's time for me to get back to training.
I'm currently at 152 lbs, 5'10''. Back around December when I stopped training heavy and 'eating right' I was hanging between 165 and 170, which was well toward where i'd like to be (175-180ish)
During that time I was eating a ton, and rightfully so. I trained for over a year before it finally *clicked* in my head. Every skinny guy with a fast metabolism goes through that period.. some never get it. I was too concerned with what I ate and not enough about how much. I went steady for about 3-4 months on roughly 4500 calories a day and slowly saw the change and improvements. That's all long long gone now... But I can get it back if I want to and really focus on it.
But it didn't come without some other...issues. I always had gas when I ate that much. Diet was still quite clean and I wasn't overloading on protein shakes (just the one post-workout, I was eating real food for my calories).. Never seemed to matter what I ate, just that sheer quantity would give me gas--and not the cute kind that makes people smile, the type that could peel paint off walls usually.
So for those of you that have taken the sage advice: EAT, is there a way around this? I'm looking forward to everything about getting back to the routine.. well, almost everything

Try to time your workouts so that you drop deuces right before your workout. After taking care of business in the bathroom, you should be clear for about an hour or two. 'Works for me.

And fiber.
My theory is that most trainees are eating way too much protein, and insufficient fiber to move that protein along in the gut -- my AM shake gets a helping of pure psyllium fiber (metamucil seems to have sugar and flavorings, neither of which I'm looking for); I'm one of those people who feel that chocolate milk is sufficient PWO, so no issues there; and I eat veggies with every meal, so plenty of natural roughage there. And I I'm a skinny guy who has to eat a ton to gain.
And I never have gas issues. So I'm convinced my theory's sound.

Hmm, when I'm eating a lot I normally go before and after. But I'm referring to gas that happens all through the day, not during workout

Thanks for the tip, I'll have to look into that. I used to pay more attention to how much fiber I got... actually, I used to eat that Kashi cereal because it was so high in fiber, until I realized that i would absolutely destroy my stomach and give me the worst gas on earth. I dont know what's in that stuff, but I know I'm not alone because I've heard quite a few other people say it does the same to them

Give it a run and see if it helps -- I just put a spoonful of psyllium in my morning shake and eat plenty of veggies (and all grains are whole grains).
My theory would love it if this helped you.

So is metamucil basically the same as psyllium? I'm moving in about a month so I need to pick up things that I can easily find (since I don't want to mail-order anything for now).. I'll deal with the extra sugar for now and cut it later if that is the case.

Whether it works for me or not, I'll likely continue to take a fiber supplement anyway
