Default would this work as a substitute for tri-pushdowns?

I can't put a diagram, so i'll describe the best I can.

Hold the bar in front of you with palms facing inward, (like you're getting ready to do reverse curls) then go up halfway (waist level; Don't go up all the way because then you'd be doing reverse curls.) with you're arms bent, then back down again.

That is the opposite of triceps pushdowns. If you are working out at home and are trying to figure out how to work triceps, there are many options. Do some close grip bench, dips, skull crushers, tricep extensions, kickbacks, close grip pushups, etc, etc...

Triceps pushdowns are small potatoes when it comes to developing your upper arms. Good luck.

The motion you're describing would be a half reverse curl, so it would work the same muscles as the reverse curl but through a lesser amplitude.

Take a look at this website for exercise ideas:

no, i've been workingout for a long time to, i just thought that doing the movement in described would be a sub for tri-pushdowns because tris come into play. then again, tris come into play on all upperbody exercises.

anyways, thanks for the advice, all.

When you say you're "going up" with the original exercise, that is like a curl. Assuming you are standing or sitting this means flexion of the arms at the elbow. WIth the hands facing each other, as you describe, you will pull a bit more with your brachioradialis which is not a bad thing, but just not a tirceps exercise. In fact, the tris relax during this motion to enable upper arm flexors to do their job!

How can the triceps come into play if the movement you are describing (going up) whether all the way or halfway is a flexion exercise? Triceps are extensors, not flexors. You should know this if you have been lifting for a long time.

Let me put it this way.

Are you standing?

At the start of the movement, is the bar down with your arms fully extended (bar should be on your thighs)?

Do you bring the bar up to waist level (that is, you are pulling it up)?

If so, then that's a flexion involving the biceps. Triceps will never get involved on the way up, with very negligible involvement on the way down.

toro,

i know, i was just trying to come up with a way to duplicate tri-pushdowns without a machine.

the reason i came up with this because i notice that on the negative, the tris come into play.

(Triceps will never get involved on the way up, with very negligible involvement on the way down.)

ok, thanks toro, i see what you mean.

i'll be getting a universal like machine pretty soon, then i'll be able to do those tri-pushdowns.
