Well I badly hurt my shoulder
Well i am 19 years old and i started training in Nov 04. I constantly training at the gym. Sometime in feb I started to feel alittle pain in my left shoulder. i brushed it off and kept on working out. I was able to do dumbell press using 80 pounds. Suddenly my shoulder pains were getting worse. It got tso bad that i couldnt lift a 65 pound dumbell on the decline bench press.
finally i decided to stop going so it can heal. I took 3 weeks off and i started to work out again and the pain came back but not as painful. After that I decided to rest it again. Now i cant workout my shoulders, arms, and chest.
I pretty much want to know if there is anything you guys may know that can help me? This is disappointing to me because i Want to be a fire fighter and sign ups are coming soon. In the mean time I work out my abs, legs, and lower back.but if anyone has any good advice . Please feel free to post it Thx.

well one one note anytime you feel pain man stop...never work thru pain cuz its essential that all your muscles be at 100% when you workout or else its a waste of time...bout the shoulder go see a doctor if its been hurting that bad and long...

Yeah I guess i learned my lesson. I am going to a clinic today to have a Doc check it out. It feels a lot better. No discomfort at all but i want it to heal 100% before i go back to the gym.

There was a lot of discussion about this here: Rotator Cuff
Basically, if it hurts, don't do it. If you can find alternate exercises do them instead. If not, rest and rehab is the only option.
See what the doc says and check back with us!

Use the poor man's cure as well, ICE! Used intermittently with heat, it provides a stimulus for inflammation reduction and bloodflow. Many times people can work around injuries, provided there isn't any severe pain, by utilizing super slow training with light weight.

Thx guys> I decided to sorta Rehab my shoulder by swimming. it adds resistance but a lot of movement and free motion. I will do this till i dont feel anything anymore. I also taking glucosamine which helps out with joint pain and helps build cartalidge (sp?). I ice it down everytime i lift something heavy ( not weights) but after work and when i go to bed I put pain releiving cram on.
The everyday idle pain I had is gone but, everytime i do some heavy lifting of a pbject or something i will feel a small moderate pain then it will go away. For instance i work in Inventory for Best buy and I have to pcik up or push objects that weigh from 10-30 pounds. this work brings the pain back but i know it is getting better because I am not in as much pain as I was before.

Glad that helped you out (although the thread did kind of wander off track at the end).

I'm surprised he would say to use a heating pad after exercise, rather than before it. If you have inflammation in the shoulder, icing is certainly in order, especially after doing exercise that, while helping, aggravates it to some extent.

Hello,I had the same type of shoulder pain.I got a cortisone shot and in about 3 weeks pain was gone.Mine was a joint problem they put the cortisone in to take away inflammation in the joint. You might want to ask your doctor to see if it would be right for you. Not every shoulder problem is the rotator cuff.

Welcome to the Forum, BigSloth (I hope that's not a description of your workout habits, LOL)
A very good point: all shoulder pain is not rotator cuff. I had a cortisone shot in my shoulder, unfortunately it didn't help in my case. Rest, rehab and ice did it for me; it was a long process though. But in the scheme of things a few weeks isn't really that long.
Why don't you go to the New Members section and post a little bit about yourself?

So far the medicine is working. Skelaxin makes me sleepybut it works. I went to the gym for the first time today in a while to see how much my choulder has pregressed and I can say while tring to flat bench 135 just by applying forceto my shoulder but not actually lifting up the bar. i felt no pain at all and that is a step up from before when i tried to get back into it a nagging pain on my immideaite part of the lift.
this is probably my second worse injury besides my pulled achilles tendon backin my freshman year. Which surprisingly took 2 years and some months to heal.
Thanks for everyones help once again and i will check out the new member section.
