What does it take to become a pro bodybuilder
I was wonderring what it takes to become a winning bodybuilder.
Good genetics? an already incredible physique? the best workout and diet imaginable? tonnes of cash?

Genetics, tons of hard work, massive amounts of food and strict dieting, good sleep and a consistent schedule, supplementation and possibly anabolics and other hormones if you want to get freaky big.

interesting replies I both agree and disagree with all!
genetics- depends. To reach the top level and compete to win big shows yes of course.
to compete to win small/regional shows- not always
there are many thousands of bodybuilders who do not have the best or in some cases even good genetics but that hasnt stopped them from trying.
largely they overcome it with aas use.
food/rest/hard work are essential.
pro hormons or aas also become essential if you want to compete

since we can speak freely on the subject of as here,i think we should mention durability.what i mean by this is the body's ability to handle the large amounts of drugs a pro must take to be competitive.a few examples of such pro's are ..franco santoriello{the face of cybergergenics} michael francois{colon problems}don long{kidneys} and flex wheeler.so i think it takes a special individual to be a successful pro.the pro's above all had to give it up for health reasons.just my opinion ......jovian

Ironically, I have a list of those strength, power and bodybuilding competitors that have died, are dying or who have ailments, and it's pretty long.

painless.....do you think it's the duration,or the type of drugs these athletes are taking?also do you think they ignore possible warnings signs from their body and or their doctor because of ego or a large contract or endorsement deal.....your thoughts. ...jovian

There is very little money in pro bodybuilding so most of these guys do it because it's their obsession. They have good genetics nonetheless and then take them to new levels with new levels of drugs from recreational BB, to contests, to state champion, to pro, and then to Olympia.

bottles upon bottles of insulin, the upper bb's i know are going crazy with this recently. I know a guy who dosnt even have a pro card who spends over 800$ a month on drugs, and i have heard estimates that make that look like nothing. but the dedication in all aspects you need is truly remarkable, to eat the exact same meals everyday at the exact same time in the exact same way you become a machine with one goal in sight.

It's all the above plus most of the time it's the ones that walk the very thin line between intensity and insanity. We all have heard about the crazy risks these athletes take with their health to be competitive, then there's the recreational drug lifestyle, the drain on funds and family life. I love bbing and I love the look but if took alll the money and time and put it into an interest building account I would be rich!!LOL, I think it takes passion above all to eat, train, take "supps", diet, compete, and then you have to WIN. Troy Alves comes to mind also Jeffers, all those years of 2nd place due to the judges...To keep coming back. Wow!! I do think the sport's powers that be owe more to the athletes. That's a whole 'nother thread.

Todays pro bodybuilders are basically science projects with great genetics.
