Nikon D3 and D300 to be released in November
The new D3 and D300 is coming out in November. I love my D2X, might just go with the D3. Although I am also tempted to buy the D300 not shooting as much as I used to means not sure spending $5k on a camera is good money spent when the D2X is such a good camera.
Good review: Nikon D300, previewed: Digital Photography Review
along with the new D3:

Decisions.....decisions.......
I am shooting more everyday and actually starting to make a couple of bucks with my camera. Man if I could just get around the $5K price tag and justify it somehow. Until then I will just have to dream.

I am hesitating; I've had the D1, the D1X and now the D2X, but I am not sure I want to buy the D3 or get the D300 as a "smaller" alternative to my D2X. I like alot about my D2X and I am sure I wouldn't be disappointed by the D3, just not sure I need to spend $5k to get the changes. Maybe instead of selling my D2X and getting the D3, I'll just keep the D2X and buy the D300.
I checked out the D300 the other day and liked the feel; sure beats carrying the bigger camera around all day when traveling.....

Okay, ran across this thread and wanted to check it out. I am in the market to buy a new digital camera myself. Now, I am not a photographer but I would love to have a nice semi-pro type camera. I am looking to purchase the Nikon D40 or D50. I know they are not what you guys are used to, but thought you could lend your thoughts? Or, if you are going to be selling any equipment, maybe you could let me know?
Thanks
Dixie

I hear good things about the D40 (isn't there a newer X version?). The D40 replaced the D50, so stick with the newer model. You might also consider the D80 which is a little bigger - here are some reviews I found:
Nikon D40X Review: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review
Nikon D80 Review: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review
I'd consider the D40x as a good way to start; the D80 is a little bit more.
Another good camera I recommend to all my friends starting out is the Canon Digital Rebel Xt.

From the D2X, the D3 isn't going to be a huge change, but there are some serious differences and improvements, and it solves a lot of the D2X's problems that the D2Xs didn't quite address fully.
Going from the D2H (my main camera) the D3 is a headslapper. Plus, since I'm going more into the wedding business, the 5:4 imaging mode will save a lot of post time.
Plus...Full-Frame...My wides will be truly wide again.
