			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div>I was having a long chat with my friend from NY last night, he's a lawyer at a top-end law firm and we were discussing whether the American Dream exists at all any more.<br />

He said that he was watching old film and it referred to the American Dream  and it made him wonder when the last time he actually heard someone say they were living the American Dream or working towards it.<br />
<br />
In &quot;Epic of America&quot;, James Truslow Adams says:<br />
&quot;The American Dream is that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for every man, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. It is a difficult dream for the European upper classes to interpret adequately, and too many of us ourselves have grown weary and mistrustful of it. It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position.&quot;<br />
<br />
We came to the conclusion that the relentless drive over the last thirty years to change the meaning of &quot;riches&quot; from its originally wide definition in the American Dream to the very narrow meaning of &quot;financial wealth&quot;.  &quot;Fuller&quot; now means having a bigger house or a sports car instead of living life to its fullest.  &quot;Better&quot; now means &quot;better than others&quot; rather than personal betterment.<br />
<br />
If someone comes into money, e.g. via a lottery win or large inheritance, they think they're living the American Dream because they can afford big houses, big cars and have lots of money.  Look at Michael Jackson, one of the US's highest earners over the decades but his money did not buy him happiness.  Those who believe money makes you happy tend to be the poorest people of all in terms of mental &quot;richness&quot; and happiness.  Here in the UK, there was a news story about a man who gives away every penny he earns over £20,000 ($30,000 roughly) because he just doesn't need it, £20,000 a year gives him the comfortable life he wants, he simply does not need any more as it would make him unhappy.<br />
<br />
We also discussed that many &quot;poor&quot; people tend to blame others for their problems.  &quot;Poor&quot; does not necessarily mean financially poor but generally poor in all areas of their life.  When many people trip these days on an uneven floor, they don't think &quot;damn, I'm clumsy today&quot;, they think &quot;I'll SUE!&quot;  All negative thoughts and no personal responsibility.  If life does throw you a curve ball, &quot;rich&quot; people will try to deal with it, &quot;poor&quot; people will wallow in self-pity and blame the world.<br />
<br />
Until we, the normal people, reclaim the word &quot;riches&quot; to mean a rich life of friends, family, working to live (rather than living to work) and anything else that makes us feel mentally rich then the American Dream is dead.  I think that's a sad indictment of the state of modern morality but then I suppose I'm in a small minority these days.</div>

Or is it that the police think it's proportionate to subject the child to the criminal justice system with a disorderly conduct charge?</div>

    It is a debt we can never repay, but he never would have asked us to. He chose to leave the comforts of Frederick, his home town, and enlist in the Marine Corps, joining an elite brotherhood drawn from every village, town and city in America. They are rich and poor, of every faith and none, Republican and Democrat and neither. Some arrive straight from high school; others leave college, in search of &quot;something more&quot;; still others go as a way to pay for college. Some enlist to put food on the table, and some sign on out of a deep sense of patriotism. And some join because they have wanted to be a soldier or a Marine for as long as they can remember. <br />
<br />
   Lance Cpl. <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/10/01/AR2009100104925.html" target="_blank">Jordan Lee Chrobot</a> was one of those.<br />
 <br />
 Jordan was killed in combat on Sept. 26. He was not just a number, or a name, or a &quot;U.S. service member&quot; or a &quot;U.S. Marine.&quot; He was his mother's son, her &quot;Jordy,&quot; her &quot;baby boy,&quot; a blue-eyed, blond-haired bundle of mischief with a sarcastic wit and dimples that lit up a room. From the age of 10, he spent countless days at his mother's side as a Civil War reenactor; others often remarked at how he took it to heart. He was a soldier, they said, and it was true. Being a soldier was at the core of who Jordan was. <br />
<br />
 Kandy Poole Johns, Jordan's mom and my dearest friend, started that September Saturday morning the way she started most Saturday mornings. Kandy, her youngest daughter, Morgan, and Morgan's &quot;bestie,&quot; Jill, were in the kitchen of their log home making breakfast. Kandy had always wanted a log cabin, and her husband, Jerry, built her this dream home in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, where she treasures the hours she spends sitting in the swing on the back deck reading. Her Facebook posts often refer to her beautiful piece of paradise in the mountains. <br />

 That morning, her youngest, Connor, came into the kitchen from the back deck to tell her that Daddy needed her outside. Still in her robe, she went to the screen door -- and time stopped. On her deck were two Marines in their dress uniforms. This is the uniform that inspires awe in most who see it; if you encounter such a Marine in an airport, watch how all eyes follow him. But it is the worst, most heart-stopping, terrifying sight that any mother or wife whose son or husband is serving in combat can find at her door. <br />
<br />
  Hell had come to Kandy's paradise. Jordan was gone. <br />
<br />
 The world lost a hero when Jordan was taken from us. He had stepped into the breach to defend the defenseless, to protect those who could not protect themselves, and now he is with his Heavenly Father. He was a Marine, a warrior and a defender, and this is the way he will live in our hearts forever. He inspires us all to selfless acts of heroism, and so his sacrifice was not in vain. <br />
<br />
 Jordan joined the Marines with his eyes open. He was not drafted; he was not forced or coerced; he was not misled. He served in Iraq and in Afghanistan, venturing thousands of miles from his home to a treacherous mountain region in a country most cannot identify on a map. He did not do it for accolades, or medals, or fame and fortune. He did it to prevent the evil that lurks in those mountains from visiting itself upon American soil. He did it to prevent the next World Trade Center or Pentagon or Shanksville, Pa. <br />
<br />
 Those of us left behind will mourn. It is the way God wired us. We will shed tears and suffer sleepless nights. We will wonder what might have been. We ask our questions. Why is Jordan no longer with us? Why has Kandy lost her &quot;baby boy&quot;? Why has Amber lost her husband? Why have Connor and Morgan and Casie lost a big brother? Why have grandparents lost a grandson? Why have so many others lost a friend? Because Jordan was a Marine. Because he was a hero. Because he chose to defend the defenseless. Because it was the right thing to do. <br />
<br />
 The night I wrote this, I told Kandy that the hole in her heart will never be filled by Jordan again. God will not fill that hole in the way we understand it. Instead, that hole can be transformed into a garden that God Himself tends. It will be a quiet place of peace that Kandy can return to again and again, where she can be alone with Jordan. Over time that garden will grow to be a lush place, full of goodness and happiness and joy. Kandy's memories of Jordan can never be taken from her.</div>

				George W. Bush makes secret visit to mourning families at Fort Hood; Laura Bush goes too<br />

Last night former President George W. Bush and his wife Laura made a secret visit to the devastated military families at Fort Hood.<br />
<br />
The Bushes instructed the commander of the mourning military base that they wanted no publicity. With their Secret Service detail, Bush and his wife made the 30 mile trip unannounced from their ranch near Crawford, Texas Friday evening.<br />
<br />
Fox News broke news of the visit this afternoon. Other sources said the former first couple spent about two hours meeting with the wounded, family and soldiers, talking quietly and at times hugging them as they did in private at other times of crisis such as post-9/11.<br />
<br />
Most presidents come to feel a genuine respect and affection for the people they lead as commander-in-chief and sometimes the affection is reciprocated.<br />
<br />
Many base workers and residents on Fort Hood are still reeling from the shooting this week by Major Nidal Malik Hasan that killed 13 people and wounded dozens of others. (See video below.)<br />
<br />
The White House announced today the Obamas plan to attend a memorial service there on Tuesday. Some foreign news reporters have begun to write unflattering comparisons of the emotional Bush vs the ever-cool, possibly cold Obama.<br />

When the moment finally does come that they have to make a split-second decision, someone's likely to second-guess them.<br />

Which is why, when a police officer does something really right, someone ought to take a moment to say so.<br />

At the U.S. Army base at Fort Hood, Texas, an Army psychiatrist (enough irony there to fuel a few TV panels) named Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan has been identified as the man who walked into the base's soldier readiness facility Thursday, shouted &quot;Allahu Akbar!&quot; and opened fire with two handguns on 300 unarmed soldiers, killing 13 and wounding 30 others.<br />
<br />
Sgt. Kimberly Munley, 35, is an Army veteran married to a soldier at Fort Bragg, N.C. She is a member of the base's &quot;civilian police force&quot; -- a private contractor.<br />
<br />
To people at Fort Hood, she's a cop.<br />
<br />
Sgt. Munley appears to have been the first armed representative of law and order to walk in on Thursday's ongoing bloodbath in the auditorium.<br />
<br />
Sgt. Munley identified the shooter. She did not ask him to share his feelings. She opened fire.<br />
<br />
Sgt. Munley's boss, Chuck Medley, told The Associated Press on Friday that Hasan then spun around and charged the sergeant, a gun in each hand.<br />
<br />
Could Sgt. Munley, hit in the wrist and both thighs, really be blamed if she'd ducked for cover?<br />
<br />
She didn't. From all reports, she stood her ground under fire, calmly reacquiring her sight picture, putting four rounds right where she wanted, in the advancing murderer's center of mass. She fired until he dropped. The killing ended.<br />
<br />
As of Friday, though in a coma, Hasan was alive. Perhaps the Army will now get a chance to remind us how justice is supposed to work.<br />
<br />
As of Friday afternoon, Kileen police said Sgt. Munley, though hospitalized, was &quot;doing fine.&quot;<br />
<br />

WAS NOT GOING BUT 15 MPH DOWN HILL,and missed the  
real sharp turn and the t-pole was about a foot off the road

I pledge if I become sick, or a member of my family becomes sick, that I will refuse to be treated by any doctor, hospital or emergency personnel if the cost for these services will in any way be subsidized by a state or federal government. <br />

I, ___________, as a conservative who DOES NOT have insurance, do hereby pledge to wait one year from the time of my first symptoms until I go to the emergency room of a government funded county hospital because I believe the 45,000 people who die every year because of access to health care deserve to die, because they are really deadbeats who could afford health insurance if they wanted it.<br />

I, ___________, as a conservative who DOES NOT have insurance, do hereby pledge to never accept any medical technologies, innovations, treatments or medications that were paid for, subsidized or developed using government funds because I believe them to be 'socialistic' and therefor evil. I know capitalistic 'for profit' companies will always act in the best interests of human beings, and never attempt to profit off of a person who is sick or dying.<br />

I further pledge to repay every dime I make working at a burger joint or as a greeter at Walmart to first repay my medical bills before buying food or housing for my family. I further pledge to pay any interest rate on any balances due, because I believe corporations and banks should be allowed to charge anything they want, even interest rates of 30, 40 and 50%, rates even the Mafia never charged. I believe in unbridled capitalism and that companies should be allowed to do whatever they want, for I consider capitalism to be my 'god' and CEOs its disciples. I hereby further pledge to praise CEO salaries and bonuses even though I know that for every dollar they make is a dollar that doesn't go to help the sick or dying. And because I was against all minimum wage increases in the past 40 years I further pledge to accept only $1.45 an hour for working at McDonalds or as a Walmart greeter, since it was the minimum wage in February 1970.<br />
<br />
I, ___________, as a conservative, hereby pledge to have my parents, or other loved ones, refuse all health care they are currently receiving from any government program, such as Medicare or Medicaid, and I further pledge to pay for all my parent's health bills. And I will further pledge to have my parents move in with me and give them 24 hour care instead of using any government subsidized nursing care or hospice care services, since I know such services are evil since they are 'socialistic' and therefore evil.<br />
<br />
I, ___________, as a conservative do hereby pledge I will continue my condemnations of the poor in the Charles Dickens story, &quot;A Christmas Carol&quot;, because I know Bob Cratchit's family were lazy deadbeats who could pay for their own health care and gotten help for their son, Tiny Tim, if they wanted to. I believe Tiny Tim should be prevented from getting health care and die, because he is poor.  <br />

I, _________, as a conservative believe in individual rights for CEOs and business owners like Ebenezer Scrooge, but not for individual rights to life, liberty or the pursuit of happiness for those who are poor, downtrodden or oppressed. Also, because I believe the poor in the Bible were deadbeats, I will continue to condemn Jesus because he was an evil socialist because he healed the sick for free, he fed the hungry for free and he lifted the spirits of the downtrodden for free. I also condemn the Good Samaritan for not charging to help that poor, beaten man who was left for dead on the side of a lonely road. I believe that the priest and the temple assistant who first found the beaten man and left him for dead without helping him did the right thing and that the Good Samaritan was an evil socialist, because not only did the Good Samaritan help the beaten man, he even gave him money so he could feed and cloth himself.<br />

I, _________, as a conservative further condemn Jesus for always attacking the rich and praising the poor, because I know CEOs and the wealthy are the true sons of god because, after all, look at how much god has rewarded them. I believe those on Wall Street deserve to make as much money as possible by using schemes and scams, like the guy who made 3 billion in 2008 alone. As a conservative I believe it is right that a person who makes 3 billion behind a computer producing nothing for his fellow man or society. I believe that Wall Street should be paid 86,000 times more than hard working teachers, firefighters, police officers and nurses, all of whom actually contribute to society and help their fellow man.<br />

crazy ,The last five years our winters have been moderate we went Five years with<br />
only a dusting and I remember when we used to get bombarded with snow, not like<br />
some states get but for us it was lots,I am wondering if this Global Warming thing<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div><font size="2">HAVANA </font>— Michael Douglas staged an impromptu walking tour of the Cuban capital's historic district Tuesday, posing for photos with construction workers and surprised residents.<br />
His visit came two days after fellow Oscar-winner Sean Penn arrived in Cuba, reportedly seeking an interview with 82-year-old Fidel Castro, who has been little seen since announcing he was suffering from an unspecified illness in July 2006. He stepped down as Cuba's president in February of the following year and was replaced by his brother Raul.<br />
Penn traveled to the Isle of Youth, off mainland Cuba on Monday to meet with local artists. There was no word on whether he got to see Fidel. He interviewed Raul during a visit last year.<br />
Little was known about Douglas' plans for his four days in Cuba, but he was accompanied on his walk through Havana's old quarter by Patricia Rodriguez, an official at the city historian's office.<br />
Among the sites he toured was a state-run tobacco shop, where employees showed the actor the finer points of rolling a Cuban cigar.<br />
It was unclear if either came with a U.S. exemption to Washington's ban on travel to Cuba.<br />

was 1987! At a lecture the other day they were playing an old news video of <br />
Lt.Col. Oliver North testifying at the Iran-Contra hearings during the Reagan <br />
Administration. <br />
<br />
There was Ollie in front of God and country getting the <br />
third degree, but what he said was stunning! <br />
<br />
He was being drilled by a <br />
senator; 'Did you not recently spend close to $60,000 for a home security <br />
system?' <br />
<br />
Ollie replied, 'Yes, I did, Sir.' <br />
<br />
The senator <br />
continued, trying to get a laugh out of the audience, 'Isn't that just a little <br />
excessive?' <br />
<br />
'No, sir,' continued Ollie. <br />
<br />
'No? And why not?' the <br />
senator asked. <br />
<br />
'Because the lives of my family and I were threatened, <br />
sir.' <br />
<br />
'Threatened? By whom?' the senator questioned. <br />
<br />
'By a <br />
terrorist, sir' Ollie answered. <br />

'Terrorist? What terrorist could <br />
possibly scare you that much?' <br />

'His name is Osama bin Laden, sir' Ollie <br />
replied. <br />

At this point the senator tried to repeat the name, but <br />
couldn't pronounce it, which most people back then probably couldn't. A couple <br />
of people laughed at the attempt.. Then the senator continued. Why are you so <br />
afraid of this man?' the senator asked. <br />
<br />
'Because, sir, he is the most <br />
evil person alive that I know of', Ollie answered. <br />
<br />

'And <br />
what do you recommend we do about him?' asked the senator. <br />
<br />
'Well, sir, <br />
if it was up to me, I would recommend that an assassin team be formed to <br />
eliminate him and his men from the face of the earth.' <br />

The senator <br />
disagreed with this approach, and that was all that was shown of the clip. <br />

First class round trip (business for the kiddos) and a great 2 bedroom apartment made for a wonderfully enjoyable trip - two locations on the Great Wall, Tienanmen Square, Forbidden City, Ming Tombs and more....</description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div>Second trip was better than the first; mostly because my daughter went along on this ride. First class round trip (business for the kiddos) and a great 2 bedroom apartment made for a wonderfully enjoyable trip - two locations on the Great Wall, Tienanmen Square, Forbidden City, Ming Tombs and more. With the seasonal color change the Great Wall was quite the sight.<br />
<br />
Add in the shopping and we must have looked like the Griswalds coming back through customs.<br />
<br />
Very interesting city, although I much preferred Rome for getting around - we hired a driver for two days as everything requires you to drive to get to it (subway is okay, but the Great Wall requires 45-60 minutes of driving each way).</div>
