That sucks, but if he needs it, small price for a healthy dog. I'd do the same.

My dog, who was sadly put to sleep in the past year due to age (he lived to 16), had surgery to remove bladder stones when he was 12 years old. The debate I had was dealing with age and putting him to sleep then or paying for the surgery (which was nearly $2000). I opted for the surgery and gave him 3.5 out of 4 excellent years. It was one of the best decisions I made.
Dogs have always been an integral part of my family, so there is very little I wouldn't do for them.

Growing up on the farm we weren't often given to even taking the dogs to the vet, ( except for the time I accidentally shot old Lightning...) much less spending much on them...more than likely they'd go out the Old Yeller way. Which was tough on everyone to be quite honest.
Don't feel bad...you are doing the right thing.

Good luck with everything. Always a hard decision to make. Like everyone has said, they are like family. At the same time, you always have to remember that they are animals and sometimes one option may outweigh the other. Hope it all goes well and things go as hoped!

yikes, they are not insured?????
I insure all my dogs now, and have them on raw diets, I never see the vets anymore, I have spent 10s of thousands in the past, I highly recommend mastercare plus at 80%, saved me soooo much money. You have to do it right away before any vet visits etc, even if you adopt, you go to petfinder and if the dog is lsited there, you get a free month and then can upgrade it.......and I sooooo highly suggest this for pets.....I have gotten more back than I have spent just from before the raw diet but now my dogs never have probs on this diet so.....
one dog was not insured well enough and got an immune mediated athritus so I will never be covered for that or related to it, but still, its saved me tons. Especially if you have purebreeds!
Every purebreed I have had has had congenital issues, especially the bulls, boxers etc.
read up on it, may be a plan. There is fine print, breed stipulations etc, I pay more for my dog listed as pure staffordshire bull terrier but my pittie was a rescue so I put her as 'mix breed' to keep her safe incase any stupid legislation comes along rergarding banning bulls, it seems to be a political trend every few years to bring that crap up but now I don't get stressed, its all bullcrap but ...my lil staffy could be at stake if that law came in, they would kill all the bulls..........stupid idiots, like in colorodo. dogicide.......
anyway, some breeds are listed there I think like some pure hounds or mastifs,........some breeds are known for probs so they are listed in but you can read all the info at the site.
I cannot stress enough how much this has saved me.
My last pit was pure and very inline bred and he had probs his whole life and cost us thousands and thousands and in his last days he had cancer which I tried to fight, it cost us 5 grand for what was supposed to be 5 wks of treatment, he died in 2 weeks as his cancer was too aggressive but yet we still had to pay this 5grand........insurance would have saved us but back then there was none and once it came out, pits were not covered........now we are all lucky to be able to have our pets insured. I was leary but its been 5 yrs now on petcare and I am sooooooo glad I did it. even with Diva, once her disease reared its head and I was not insured right, it is not covered but yet its worth the 40bucks a month because other things happen. silly little ear, or eye infections, skin rashes.....it can all cost so much as it adds up.
