Vicious little criminal banned from school
NY Times
Quite right too... these children are out of control and need to be slapped down at all times. How dare this child bring a lethal weapon into school!
(Note for those who didn't pick it up, that was sarcasm)

I read the whole story 'now forgive me if I am wrong' but nothing
was ever said about the boys mother knowing or not knowing!
I think if she did know she has to be held accountable not him
just my opinion.

Hey, I know a retired Navy SEAL and part time ninja who could kill with one of those things! Zero-tolerance!

It's a scout's eating implement. If I had a child, I doubt I'd think twice about my 6 year old wanting to take his new eating implement to school. It's certainly nothing that ever deserves the child being suspended or the parent even being criticised.

Hmmm... maybe it's a cultural thing but accountability and a six year old's enthusiasm tend not to be things I'd consider together. Surely schools should be encouraging enthusiasm rather than using blunt tools that would be thrown out of court with prejudice if used against an adult.

Dang, that was well said CKN.
I reckon I brought a pocketknife to school every day from about 6th grade on up. Zero-tolerance = zero common sense.

I can see adhering to the rule of zero tolerance......but the punishment itself should be individuated according to the implement. A Scouts eating tool would be confiscated at any airport here in North America, but that doesn't mean anyone would be going off to prison for posessing a Scouts survival implement.....seems common sense to me that the parents should have been more aware of, instead of setting this kid up for all this silliness.....just my

here's a picture of the weapon or may I say weapons of mass destruction.........
My God!!! couldn't they just have taken the pocket tool away and called the kids parents to come and pick it up if they didn't want the thing at their school
I mean WTF!!! got to go to court hearings and the child has to get counseling, for what, being proud of being a scout and wanting to bring his new prize possession to school and show his friends? they'll probably consider him a terrorist and put him on the no fly list and he'll loose all his rights as an American citizen..... all at the age of 6 years old
I think the school board is being retarded about this one....... pfffft, IDIOTS!!!

I remember taking my swiss army knife to school as a kid. We used to mess with them at recess. But that was a different time and place. Now a little brat would stab another kid for cutting in the lunch line!!!
Kids these days. Most of the parents should be slapped around instead.

I took my shurikens (throwing stars) to school back in the 6th grade - that was back when the ninja craze was going on... The teacher saw me playing with them and confiscated them. She gave them back to me at the end of the day and told me not to bring them back again. End of story.
Pretty simple solution if you ask me, but I suppose it does require you have a lick of common sense...

Here's my take... you can't have knives, martial arts weapons or other potentially dangerous items allowed in the schools. PERIOD
What has gone wrong is the lack of common sense and the ability of people to assume control of the situation. I guarantee you that the teacher is acting on a mandate by the school board which will probably put her job in jeopardy if she doesn't report the incident. Then the Administrator must follow guidelines which don't leave room for interpretation, and if they use their heads instead of the book, they too will be dismissed.
I was guilty of bringing a pack of fire crackers one day, it was handled as is Raijin's case by a good teacher. Unlike Raijins' case though, my dad got a call. And as I lay on my bed that night (sitting had become uncomfortable) I learned that stupidity had a price.
So what could have been handled in the past with a simple confiscation, parent call and "hey, don't do that again" instead becomes a national news story. Common Sense and the power to use it will soon be litigated away. . .

from the article...
Quote:

"It just seems unfair,” Zachary said, pausing as he practiced writing lower-case letters with his mother, who is home-schooling him while the family tries to overturn his punishment.

If they have the means, the parents might want to consider that home-schooling as a permanent situation. Except then the Department of Homeland Security would place them on a watch list.

A penny wise and a pound "stupid"!
Wow, sounds like the next "weapon" to be placed the banned list is the spork. Not quite a fork and not quite a spoon, but still, in the hands of an adept wielder, quite the weapon.
Common sense has definitely left the building and stupidity runs rampant, but hey, this is all in the name of "Security" right?
