Alright, who's seen it and what did you think? Here's what I said on Facebook...
LOVED AVATAR! OK, sure, I pretty much figured out the whole story 5 min in, but to SEE it play out, in 3-D no less, was AMAZING! BEST CGI I have seen! And the characters, the creatures/animals, the battle scenes....INCREDIBLE!!! It's the first time I really believed CGI characters were real. And don't get me wrong, the story is not bad...and I refuse to politicize it....TWO THUMBS UP!

I am a cheap basta... I mean I'm frugal, so I'll wait for it to come out on dvd. Some people I know have told me that it will lose something when it's not seen on the big screen. Oh well. I guess the movie will have to impress me for more than just the 3D and effects.

I loved it to the dickens! I know what you mean about the story, it was already done in Pocohootas, but told and displayed with so much more emotion and spectacularity (making up more words)
I saw it in 2D, i wanna go back to see it again in 3D but I am a bit centro-frugal too Wil! so maybe I'll wait til I can get it some other way and just cross my eyes

If you watch regular movies with your eyes unfocused they look like 3D.
And sometimes you can see an entirely different scene in the other dimensional plane.

I have seen Avatar three times so far--each time with 3D glasses.
I've decided that it's my favorite movie. Obviously, the special effects were amazing, but I liked all of the other elements in the movie too. The way each of the characters interacted with their environment was well done, and there were multiple underlying themes in the movie that made you think about life. The main themes that stood out for me were respect for the environment, and respect for other people. I'd give it a 9 out of 10, and I think that this is James Cameron's finest piece of work; it should win multiple academy awards. The only thing I would do differently if I were the one making the film is alter the storyline. Most events were very predictable, which is usually the case in all movies involving the elements of romance and good guy versus bad guy.
For me personally, the movie Avatar had such a profound effect on me that I actually became depressed for a couple weeks after watching it for the first time. I know this must sound strange to everyone else, but the only analogy I can think of to make it understandable is that the movie is like watching a dream. You know how sometimes while you are sleeping you have a really vivid dream that you wish was real? Then you wake up in a state of normalcy and you realize that the dream isn't real, and you have to get ready for your mundane life, whether it be work or school. I think this is due to the movie looking so realistic--especially with the 3D glasses--that it tricks your eyes and brain into thinking that what you are watching is actually real and that Pandora is a real place, but you know in your mind that it isn't. It took me a couple of weeks to get over it and convince my body that what I saw is not real and is unattainable.
I plan to see it a fourth time--in 3D--and I'll be looking forward to the sequel.

GG, I know what you mean when you said the storyline was already done. "Dances With Wolves" is another with the same story.
Insex, my dream is to go see it again in IMAX 3-D. That would be off the chart!

Saw it, loved it. Sure the story wasn't so original (and how many are really) but it was almost like the story was secondary to the presentation, the people and the world he wanted to show. At time I forgot it was completely CG I was looking at and since I saw it in 3D(which was used tastefully) I actually tried to shoo away some things in the foreground. The glasses were a little small for my head but they worked at a tilt so I just leaned back and laid them on top of my head.
