Noob Oatmeal question
Okay, bear with me here because I started eating oatmeal a couple of months ago, and never had it before in my life
I've been eating instant, pre-cooked oatmeal--the ones that come in the individual packets. The flavored ones are just sugar bombs so i've only been eating the plain ones. I've tried adding this and that, but my hate of slimy texture got the best of me, so I don't add any milk or water. I usually mix two packets with one cup of yogurt and eat it that way, or otherwise just eat it plain and dry.
I know the instant stuff isn't as good as the real deal, so what should I be looking for in the store? I'd prefer something I don't really have to cook and that I can eat dry, so point me in that direction. If that means sticking with the instant stuff, then that's fine--but if there's a healthier option then what should I be looking for?
I know this may seem like a pretty dumb question, but like I said, it's not something I ever had growing up and i'm just starting with it. I've only eaten the instant so far, and don't want to go to the store guessing.

Some people just don't like it, add fruit?
Idk. Nothing helps me. . I cook it and after every bite I take a huge gulp of water and just do w.e it takes to get it down the hatch.

Traditional Style in the cylindrical cardboard tube.
I like to add it to my protien shake in the morning. 1/2 cup oats with 1.5 scoop whey (30g ish).
Thats how I got around the 'delight' of eating oatmeal.
ps another good thing to put in your oatmeal or shake would be ground flax seed.

I'm a big fan of malt-o-meal and oatmeal!!! For oatmeal I just get the bigger tub (42oz). I just put 6 spoonfuls in a bowl and add water. Then just toss in the microwave for 2 mins. or close to that. Eat away and it leaves no crazy texture or taste to me. I'd really buy it in the bigger tub if I was you and make sure to triple check the back label to make sure all that the INGREDIENTS says is 100% Rolled Oats. No need for any extra junk in it!!! Plus my 6-8 eggs whites and then before I leave the house my protein shake and thats the way a champion starts his day!! LOL!!

Get yourself some steel cut natural oats, sometime called Irish oatmeal. it takes a little longer to cook but it won't have that slimey consistency your talking about. You can make a large batch, under cook it by a few minutes. then You can keep it in the fridge for up to seven days. It'lkl get really solid, you just cut it into cubes and reheat it with water or milk and it turns out great in about a minute. Blueberries and raspberries are what i like to add, I never add sugar.

I can pretty much handle any flavor (or no flavor) in my foods, but texture puts me off. Unless it has the consistency of a paste or is completely dry, i can't get it down the hatch.
So that's all I'm looking for--what kind can I eat DRY? I'll most likely keep mixing with yogurt, but might try the protein shake option as well, that doesn't sound bad at all

Don't give up on it till you try the Irish variety. It is heartier and has a texture like couscous or orzo pasta. . .

I'll give it a try, of course. But my morning routine doesn't involve cooking (nor does my living situation currently accommodate it), so I'm usually looking for something that's a bit easier on the go, or that I can pull out when i get few free minutes in the morning at work

i actually eat my oatmeal dry too, just with a fork.
i either eat quaker old fashioned oatmeal or irish steel cut oats.
you get them in the cereal isle in your supermarket.
i just drink water if it gets too dry.
my cowokers make fun of me for this...

Here's one for ya.......since it's breakfast and the first meal after a long nite's fast, wouldn't hurt to add a scoop of your fave protein (I like chocolate) and a tbsp of natural peanut butter, a sprinkle of your sweetner of choice and some cinnamon to taste. A complete meal in a bowl that tastes like cookie dough rather than boring ol' oats n' water....works with either steel cut or regular....ditch the instant pkgs....too much sodium!
