Thumbs up I ran my first tri today...

Today I completed my first triathelon; it was a small 'spint tri' that was a 250 meter swim, 12 mike bike and 3 mile run. I've been 'training' for this for a few months and was ready until I had to get up at 4:30am. I'm not a big fan of this early morning stuff for races; I was even less thrilled when it was near-raining conditions, low 50s and the water in the pool was a brisk 67 degrees. I had alot of trouble in the pool - it wasn't anything I was prepared for, all those people in the pool at once spashing around, the freezing cold water - I managed to do it in the ballpark of my expectations, but only with my head above water (slowing me down) and having to work that much harder. Loved the bike ride - found a nice tush on a gal in tights in front of me and I was off. The run sucked when my right calf cramped up about 1 mile into it - although I managed my usual 10:30 mile time for all three miles.

Not a time to brag about - 1:27 - but an accomplishment none the less.

Update: I got this email today:

For your records, the weather that day was Mostly cloudy, 57 degrees F, 94% humdity, East wind 9 mph.

There were 38 finishers in the Male 40 to 44 age group and 388 finishers in the Age Group Division.

Your overall finish place was 264, your age group finish place was 30 and your gender finish place was 165.
Your time was 1:27:48.67.

Your Swim time was 07:57.17, Overall place 354, Gender place 192
Your Bike time was 41:22.40, Overall Place 148, Gender place 122, Avg. Speed 18.0m.
Your Run time was 32:24.80, Overall place 323, Run Pace 10:27

Awesome stuff FP! Congrats. Was this in Northern VA? I used to live in Herndon, then Alexandria.

Yep, it was in Centreville; near Route 29/I-66.

I checked the website and I placed 264 out of 378, my splits were:

7:57 swim
3:54 t1
41:22 bike (18mph pace)
2:09 t2
32:24 (10:27 pace)

1:27:48 total time

All right where I expected the numbers to be (although little faster on the bike).

Very nice effort for the first time!!

378 people in the pool sounds crazy!! although 67 is warmer than the water ever gets in Maine!!

good job on focus on!! minimizes the effort!!

I know, blurry photos - thats what you get when you give your Pro camera to someone who uses point and shoot cameras.

Congratulations FP!. You have inspired me to start investigating local triathalons. Am I understanding your splits above correctly ... t1 and t2 are the transition times from water to bike and bike to running?

Correct. I switched shoes from the bike to the run as I used my clip shoes on the bike ride. I suppose I could have made for a little better time by just using my running shoes on the bike; but I'm used to riding with my clips.

Congrats to you, FP ! That rocks...and that looks like a bad ass Specialized youre stroking, as well. Many moons ago, I used to race, went to category 3, but I left the Triathlons to you bad boys. Nowadays, I'll occasionally watch a Triathlon on TV, if I have plenty of Ranch dressing for my wings...

(Edit) Now that I see your mug in the pics, I know why you get all the babes...
