Jim, first off, I'm sorry for your injury. I had a stress fracture earlier this year that kept me out of a half marathon and my first tri of the season, so I can empathize. I've been watching this thread to see if you get any nibbles on your bait. Maybe you've received a private response, but I'm not surprised to see no public response to your question. 1. USAT takes a dim view of selling or transferring your race number. If you get caught, they might even pull your card. USAT has a lot invested in their amateur ranking system, so they won't sanction race promoters who fail to safeguard the integrity of the race results. Personally, I think they're a little too rigid on this point, but it's not my call. 2. The last I checked the race wasn't full, so competitors may not want to risk using your entry ID when they can simply buy their own spot.
Some race promoters give an exemption into next year's race, based on a doctor's statement. I don't know Vineman's policy. Good luck. I hope you heal quickly.
