Has UFC knocked boxing out
i had a converstation with my firend who is irish ans into boxing whereiwas telling him that boxing is an old traditional sport that doesn't have a great following any more and the UFC has over shadowed it in terms of both participants and viewers.
he stays with his opinion that boxing will always be there becasue it has tradition beind it, mind you he comes from ireland
what does other people think

I use to watch and follow boxing but I started following MMA the last couple of years. And I honestly cannot tell you the last time I watched an entire boxing match.

i think the generation we r into now..say if ur 15 n up to like maybe 25 ur a mma fan..ne1 older has grown up wit boxing so their is ur "traditional" approach...to compare them is vague i think...they r too different sports...tho fightin is a common ground boxing is a different in the sense that it is just more hand rather than ...ground n pound, kicks, etc.... i think a good boxing fight is a great thing to watch as opposed to a mma fight that is a good fight would also be good....to say would u rather watch a boxing fight rather than mma fight, id say u cant decide until u watch the fight....overall i have started to enjoy mma much much more than boxing...i am 21...how ever the last ortiz v shamrockfight was dissapointin to me, so if a boxing fight was betta i would have to pick boxing ova that..if that makes sense....but i do think boxing is more mainstream today...ufc has potential to kill it tho i think....also boxing makes much more revenue in PPV rather than ufc ppv...but in time mma will go more mainstream n possibly get biggr than boxing..if mainstream is what true fans want? thats another question

i agree with the point mentioed, here is my take on the whole thing.
no one is really born on or the other i.e. a boxer or an mma person, there are just people who like to ight and people who don't. i think today as italian said most of the younger generation will be seeing UFC and be brought up on that so the young fighter will naturally lean in that direction.
Countires with a strong boxing tradtion Britain and ireland for example will always have the hard core familes who will only like boxing but i think in time UFC will over take boxing just becasue there are not as many people goingt in for it.
the only trouble is as a seoc sport i think boxing is much better, mainly becasue there is no ground work and you ware watching strikes all the time which are visually more exciting and easier to understand than a ground fight

Boxing
I have been a boxing fan since I was a kid and still enjoy it. My main gripe with boxing now is that fact that it takes so long to get a good fight to happen especially with the heavyweights. It is frustrating when you have to wait a year or more to see two fighters get in the ring and duke it out. Its all about the money and a fighter will pull out in a hearbeat if his purse is not to his liking. MMA? I LOVE it. We get to see fighters go at it every couple of months. We get to see fighters fight just to FIGHT! Imagine that!! MMA purse's sure are not up to where they should be and hopefully that will change but these guys have a passion for fighting and you can see it when they are in the cage. I think MMA is the future. Boxing will always have a place but I don't think it will ever be as it once was.

opposite effect for me...
I never gave boxing a second thought until I got introduced to MMA, which I originally started in for self-defense. Of course, boxing is one of the many keys to the mix. I learned alot from the guys that were previously boxers. Same goes for wrestlers (as in the traditional wrestlers, as opposed to the pro-folding-chair style)- had always thought it was a pansy-lycra sport, till I couldn't hold my own on the ground any time I was sparring with a wrestler. I learned as much from them as from my BJJ instructor. Now, I never pass up a boxing match or a real wrestling match on TV, no matter what level!
I think that if you can improve in the individual areas, your whole game is improved when you go live with a training partner. And one way to do that is to study all the components that contribute to MMA in their original forms.
JMHO. Long Live MMA- wish it existed where I now live!!

I think that boxing is always going to have a huge gathering. When the fights in boxing come around, their events are always sold out, so it's not like MMA is stealing away fans. I don't think that one is going to overshadow the other. If you like fighting, then you'll love to watch a good fight, and in my opinion, there is nothing like the drama, or display of courage and heart in a good boxing match.
Purse wise, boxers fight for money whereas the MMA fighters seem to fight because they want to. There are the couple of boxers that fight to show their talent, and really want to do something in the sport. First name that comes to mind is Wladimir Klitschko.
Boxing seems to be harder to find, but it is there. You have HBO's boxing after dark, ESPN Friday Night Fights, Tuesday Night Fights, and Wednesday night Fights, to get your boxing news you can watch TSNs' "In This Corner With Russ Anber", which are all free if you have the channels. I don't which sucks, so I don't even know if those are still on the air, but I've got a very strong feeling that they are. Then you have the PPV. So it is around, but the advertising isn't.
