New Martial Arts Series
Here's a new series on the History channel on martial arts, premiering on the 20th of July. Looks good, can't wait.

I've watched the Muy Thai episode and the Karate episode thus far.
The series seems ok. It gives a good overview of each art and the hosts are entertaining. Some of the info sounds a bit dubious, like the 'death strikes' etc, and copious analogies to describe impact forces. Other than that, it's interesting to see the kind of grassroots training that the dynamic duo seek out.
The fights at the end of each episode are a bit disappointing because the opponents seem to go pretty easy on the hosts - sorry, I wouldn't mind seeing one of them get schooled now and then. =) Of course, it's nuts to think that they could attain the skill or body conditioning that the pro stylists have in the span of a single taping, but it certainly would demonstrate the effectiveness of their training.
Good stuff. I have the DVR set to record the rest!

The power equations are made up. they just make up variables and use derivitives/function of derivitive signs :/. kind of discredited it.

I take it as light martial arts entertainment, like a segment on a news magazine show, shallow but entertaining.
More interesting is the nice shots of the country they happen to be in. If you look at it that way it's a travel show with punching, which is pretty damn great.

I thought the Karate one was a bit disappointing, but it does seem to prove which arts are hardest to learn.
In the eskrema one, his opponent breaks his finger, and in the Savate one the same bloke gets his knee damaged in training bouts.
There is a nice double hook technique in the Muay Thai one, and there was some nice stuff in the Eskrema one as well.
In the Savate one there is a nice blocking kick, and the stuff with canes was interesting too.
I did not put a lot of time in the figures, but the basic fact that legs are twice as strong as arms is what I have always been taught.
The best scene so far is at the start of the Muay Thai one, just after the bloke has been knocked out. The look on the hosts faces was priceless.
It is about time some of these arts got some screen time.
They do Judo next, so that should be really interesting, but I am really waiting for the Silat one.

I agree, they can only do a really superficial run through in one episode. And the idea of taking on an expert with < a month of training is downright ridiculous. But it's still entertaining to watch and I usually take at least one decent idea from each episode.
