PrISM is not very well liked
Default Picking a School

I visited a school this weekend and sat in on their MMA class. The school is about 30-35 minutes from where I live and they have classes for many different styles. They do MMA, BJJ, Muay Thai along with some others like Kung Fu and Aikido. Membership runs for $115 per month and that includes access to both of their facilities (they have two) and you can get in on any class you like how ever often you like.

So what are some of the things I should look for to determine whether or not this is a 'black-belt factory?' Do you guys think this is too expensive?

Hi,

I think you should ask that since there are different disciplines being taught in this school some of the questions?
1. If you learned Karate alone, how long would on average it would take to be a black belt. This normally takes many years, my cousin owns a school here in Guelph Ontario, and he only has 2 black belts, took them 10 years to obtain it from him.
2. If you are training Muay Thai alone, ask if there is a "black belt" for this, there shouldn't be, since Muau Thai doesn't have "Belts".
3. See if the school you are prospecting is actively involved in the community. Normally most martial arts schools would be actively involved in their community.
4. See how many students are present, and how long they have been training at the facility.
5. If you are familiar with the various types of martial arts, ask specific questions about the forms of discipline. Like Jiu Jitsu, it is Brazilain or Japanese (Judo).
6. Ask about tournaments, grading routines, etc.

To give an example: I have been training in Muay Thai for 12 years (when young) and am an instructor (KRU) (part time) for the school I train. I used to train BJJ for 8 years and only recently received by Brown Belt. This is just to give an example of the rigorous training involved.

In terms of membership that price sounds about average within the industry per month. Yearly fees if offered are about $1000 - $1500 depending on the school.

I know in the schools I teach and train we do not allow spectator's to watch class, so I found this very interesting that they allowed you in their MMA class, but every school is different. Even the young children that we teach, the parents aren't allowed beyond the "Dojo/ Gym doors", they cannot see inside (only one window).

Maybe if you talk to one of the black belts there, ask them how long it took them to receive that degree. If it took them less than 5 years I would be questioning it, most definitely.

Good luck, and I hope you find a school that suites your needs.
