The man is right. Suggesting such a course of action betrays a little bit of truth about the author:
1. He's basing his suggestion on the assumption that the offender will announce his intentions to assault. That's an inaccurate portrait of criminal behavior.
2. He's assuming that a person trained in martial arts would have a chance to fight an armed attacker (for who the fuck would commit an assault bare handed), specially if he's not carrying an equalizer (a weapon) at the time of the assault. That's a "Mr. Miyagi" fantasy.
Those two things would make question the usefulness of that type of self-defense instruction.
