Default deviated septum

anyone ever gone through surgury to repair a septum. was it worth it? I am considering because of limited air flow through one side. How long was the recovery. was there any effect in your voice? thanks

Cool

Never had it done. I played Soccer throughout my chidhood, youth & High School.
I know alot of guys that had the surgery.
From what I remember, they had the surgery because of an
Injury to thier nose.(It got broken real bad or 1 to many times).

I don't think it was too big of a deal, mostly an out-patient type of procedure.
Their voices did not chage to my recollection..

I went through the procedure when I was in high school because I couldn't breathe out of my nose at all. It was an out-patient surgery, and I had to return to have the gauze checked and then taken out when it was time. When the gauze gets taken out, it will be the wierdest feeling you have ever had. It is definately worth it though, as I have been able to breathe through my nose ever since. The only real downside is now I can smell things that I would rather not be able to smell.

Septum-surgery is know for its good outcomes and high success rates. Though initial it may look like a disaster, after the swelling is gone you'll be surprised of the result. Note: sometimes a deviated septum just fits at someones appearance and correction is not indicated as it would negatively influence someone's looks. You should realize this and talk 'bout it with the performing surgeon.

Not a big deal you heal fast. You can breath much better. I had tons of nose bleeds because of the pressure on one side - after surgery all was cured. If yours is really bad and you sound like you are always stuffed up your voice might change.

My nose was broken also and as a result I have a deviated septum. My doctor told me that the surgery would be painful, and could lead to a change in your voice. I went through with it but my voice remained the same. Healing was about a couple of weeks, but my nose remained somewhat inflamed for much longer. I can definately breath better though, but as mitchell said all of the symptoms don't usually go away. I too have the occasional nosebleeds.

I've got a deviated septum as well. The only time that it bothers me is when I'm all stubbed up. My right nostril is filled up with junk long after my left one has dried out. I've considered surgery, but it's kinda like deciding on installing a geothermal unit to cool your house. Sure you'll save on bills for years to come, but is it really worth the incredible cost to put it together?

What's the worst that could happen to your voice? Seems like if your septum is pinched, your voice would be more nasal, so after surgery, maybe you'll sound like Barry White?

i had it done over womter break a few years back...i think my senior yr in hs..im 20 now....

the first 3 days for me was pretty bad, just had to like sleep it off....but for a few weeks u have to wear a gauze like cast on nose, so not most flattering look....sum nose bleeds every now n then with gauze...

they knocked me out fully...so no pain in surgery

i heard that the pack ur nose with gauze n when they take it out its painful like whoa....long long thread of gauze, but for me it was nutin...the stiches were the type that dissolved n came out within weeks....so now i feel better and can breath a lot better...of course there r side effects just like nething else, no change in voice tho...if u wanna do it go for it...just be aware that ur nose wont rly change just be straightened out...not a nose job..justy a refixing

For me it was a great surgery. It helped my nosebleeds a ton. I had so much pressure on one side that it was always raw and bleeding.

I also had problems with sinus infections. This did not help that problem. Granted I had the surgery 12 years ago. Last year I had sinus surgery to work on the infections and help with allergies. It is a world of difference. My point is this - check on your doctor. Some are really good some are not. Go to and ENT - not a plastic surgeon for it. The ENT can check into your sinuses and make sure everything is working right.

I had my nose fixed and it was very much worth the slight pain. It looked much, much better and I could breath a lot better too. I would absolutely recommend it. You can go back to work after a week.
