Knee reconstruction
Heya, I've got a ruptured ACL and (k)need a reco...should I hit the gym and stregthen the joint before the op, or should I get the op done ASAP and worry about rehab and stregthening later? It's been a year, got a pretty good range of movement and mainly pain free but it's got to the point where I have to get it done now....can barely run and it hurts even swimming sometimes as well...

When I had my ACL reconstruction done my ortho had me do about 6 weeks of "prehab". This strengthened the quads mostly and got me ready for a faster recovery. If you want, PM me and I'll point you in the direction of some good prehab exercises. However, you should start looking now for a good therapist, you'll need one after the surgery.

REHAB SUCK. when i tore my mcl they didn't do surgery but imobilized my knee for 4 weeks. my legs got so skinny. it looked like i had chicken legs. ide go for the prehab so you can get recover faster as Engr says. How did you rupture your ACL?

Best medical advice would be from your doctor. We can share our experiences but they may not be applicable in your case.

I couldn't agree with OF more. You need a good, competent orthopedic surgeon. He will evaluate your particular injury and discuss options with you. Those knees have got to carry you around for a long time, take care of them.

i take it you've had second and/or third opinions about what to do, but you need professional advice rather than anecdotal insight...

I have to get done sooner rather than later, I went bowling on the weekend and it collapsed on me just from that - I made a total tool of myself going A over T, bit still managed a strike! Gotta do it ASAP....

sorry to hear about the collapse... even though you did get a strike! let's hope you didn't cause any irreparable damage!
glad you're going to get it done, though! like they say, "there's no time like the present..."

oddly enough, i happen to have just had acl reconstruction on the 13th of this month. i did a few weeks of rehab to gain back strength and mobility during the school year because i had my surgery scheduled for the summer so that i wouldnt miss too many days. i'm actually doing great right now, i have little to no pain, i haven't even used half of my pain medicine and i don't need any more of it. i have 120 degrees of mobility, which is the goal for six weeks, and it has only been one week. with that said, yes, i highly suggest doing a bit of rehab and strengthening prior to your surgery.
