Have trouble getting to sleep
So lately, I have been having trouble getting to sleep. Is there something I can eat before I go to sleep to help me fall asleep faster? Something I can take? Its been happening for a while, and I just cant get to sleep before 1 am. Ill get to bed at 1130 and just lay there. Any suggestions? I didnt know where this would fit so I just put it in here.

Hmm An old wives story here is Warm Milk. How true this is I don't know.
You could bonk you're head off the wall really really hard...that might do the trick!
Do you feel tired in the morning? Maybe you dont need to be in bed at 11:30? Just a thought.
im sure they'll be plenty of suggestions for sleeping aids soon!

have you been going to sleep at 1am for the last 3 years? i know i did once and when i got a job and had to crash early it was very hard to go to sleep, even when i worked graveyeards that was a trip itself. im sure once you start wakign up at 7am evrey morning your going to feel tired enough at 11pm to actaully crash and junk it just takes time for the body to adjust to that routine.

If you don't want to medicate yourself as joker suggested,
try counting sheep (an Aussie home remedy) or try reading
one of Irish's posts from start to finish. guaranteed

Reading always does it for me. Doesn't even have to be a book. A cateloge, magazine, or newspaper seem's to work fine. Sometimes it takes quite a while for your mind to unwind and relax. So, if you work later hours, you could be up for a while, even though your body is tired. I personally have a couple of beers nearly every night, but sometimes I'm still just to "wound-up", so the reading seems to really help. Good luck my friend.

I take a 3 mg capsule of melatonin during periods when I have trouble sleeping and it is an effective sleep aid. Take it about an hr before you want to sleep and you will find a deep slumber. Still legal in the USA but not in Canada for some reason...

I've been having boughts of sleeplessness for several months now, and the bonking your head doesn't work, I've tried it. And I don't know about the warm milk, but the 4 cold beers seamed to do the trick the other night.
Seriously though this is a problem I've been having also and would like to hear some reasonible solutions as well.

I pretty much garuntee it will put you to sleep fast. You can purchase these at your local walmart.

Diphenhydramine is the active ingredient in Benadryl, an allergy medication that is notorious for causing drowziness. You can pick up the store brand version of Benadryl tablets or capsules at any store. The diphenhydramine (usually 25mg per tab) is also the active ingredient in many over the counter sleep aids, including Tylenol PM. It's much cheaper to purchase the store brand version of the Benadryl allergy pills. Just be careful, it may knock you out!!! I would try reading while laying in bed first before using any medications. Sleep well chief!

I read in Men's Health that they recommend drinking Cranberry Juice before bedtime to help you sleep. I've found that "Simply Sleep" by Tylenol works really well and doesn't leave me feeling like dookie in the morning...Benadryl works good to. Good luck, this is a problem that I have had for years and I can't drink...or smoke myself to sleep unfortunately.

I too have trouble falling asleep. What I do is drink a cup of "Sleepytyme" tea every evening about an hour before I go to bed. You can find it most grocery stores. Some even sell the "Sleepytyme Extra". I believe its the camamile (not sure about the spelling) that relaxes you. Anyway, I find I can fall asleep easier. It is not addicting and there are no after effect like you can have with taking stuff like Benedryl. It's not that expensive either and a large box would last over a month. I usually put a small amount of sugar in mine as it doesn't taste that great all by itself. Hope this helps. Take care.

When you decide to go to bed, you have to make sure your sleeping environment is cool, calm and overall favorable to sleep. A bedroom should only be used for sleeping purposes (ok ok... and for some other activities ). No TVs, computers or bright lights in the bedroom. When you want to watch a movie, read a book, talk on the phone or converse with friends and loved ones, you do so somewhere else.
Sometime however, it's not enough. Usually, it's simply a matter of getting yourself to relax. Turn of the TV, the radio and most of the lights, go out, take a walk and drink something hot when you get back home. Leave the TV/radio/lights turned off and do some breathing exercises as you go to bed. Relax.
The point is that sleeping is a mindset as much as a physical need. If you can't stop thinking, you'll probably not be able to sleep.

well cashews, i have a tv, but you cant see anything in my room when the lights are off. i have a fan that goes on because i get hot when i fall asleep. as far as going to sleep late. yah i go to sleep late. especially this year cause college i didnt have classes starting till late, so i would just stay up late anyway.
i did find that while in high school and i had a regular routine of being up at 630 every morning, i would fall asleep by about 11, but i fucking hated it. so id rather have trouble falling asleep and getting up later, than going to sleep early and walking up and hating geting up early.
txt, i might try that sleepytime stuff you mentioned.
also, if i read a magazine for example, ill read it, and then be like, man i gotta read more, and then i never get to sleep. if i read a book, its pretty much the same thing. i dont really get tired. however i get tired if im studying for school in my computer chair but as soon as i get up and go to my bed, im awake again. i think ima have to have a meeting with a doctor or something, see what i can work out.
thanks for your responses fellas. any more suggestions are very welcomed.

benadryl over tylenol PM any day. 2 bena's and i'm out. Or I just take my pain killers left over from my knee surgery. If you dont want med's, try some stretching. Hold each stretch for about 30 seconds. Emphasize large muscle groups; i.e. back, legs

right... :P
actually that probably would work!
I'm like you I suck hugely at sleeping too! What usually keeps me up is the 400 thousand gallons of thoughts going round in my head. TV before bed helps dumb your brain, or if that doesnt work than I make up stories in my head while I'm trying to sleep because then at least my brain can just concerntrate on the one thing. It helps
