Any winter sports enthusiasts out there?
Winter finally came within the last week where nearly 3 feet of snow fell in the mountains over the weekend. I live about 30 minutes from a ski resort (Bogus Basin outside of Boise, Idaho) and was finally able to go snow shoeing last night after waiting to get going with the snow sports for the last month.
Snow shoeing at night is always great - its peaceful and the stars are amazing. We went on a 2 mile hike to a point that looks out over a valley where I live (that includes Boise) and then back through some trails. The stars and moon kept everything nicely lit, so we didn't need our headlamps.
We hiked for about 2 miles into a clearing that allows the valley to be seen very clearly - where Boise and other cities are located. The plan is to start getting into shape to hike into the Sawtooth Mountains in about a month and spend at least a night there - maybe two. The hike will take us to Hellroaring Lake (you should google it for pictures - it is amazing in the summer time) which is about 5-6 miles in. The catch is getting used to the cold first... It's definitely a much more intense take on camping and hiking, but it is fun pushing yourself into doing it.
I'm not sure if this thread should be in the skiing, snowboardng, winter area or the hiking area...

Snow shoeing sounds fun! I have yet to try it. Bogus Basin looks nice. Gotta love western ski areas.
I do some XC skiing, occasional downhill and snowboarding. Hopefully I can fit in a trip for any of the above with my work travel schedule this winter.
My favorite places are the Adirondack Mountains of upstate NY (via Albany airport) and the White Mountains of NH.

I highly recommend snoe shoeing. It is fun walking / running through powder. I like bringing along a sled from time to time, too. It is not as fun as skiing, cross-country skiing, or snow boarding (I ski and cross country), but it is definitely fun to be out in the snow.

Been a Red Wings fan my whole life, Milwaukee has never had an NHL franchise, so I go see the Admirals play in the IHL. I know the Blackhawks are closer but I just can't cheer for any team from Chicago. The canadians should be a force this year, I hope you do well....

I was rooting for the Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Final last season (and the previous one), but I was really disappointed by the way they played the decisive game, though not as much as they and you must have been . Still, it's beautiful to see them play as when they're at their best no one can beat them.
As for the Canadiens, it will be interesting to see how they do with all the new faces they brought in, but somehow I doubt they'll go very far in the playoffs, assuming/hoping they reach 'em. They won their first game tonight against Toronto in overtime, but were outshot 46-27... They won't get away with it every time!

Does ice fishing count? Getting some buds together, drilling a few holes, making a fire on the lake and opening some beers till the sun comes up.
Ohh and go Washington caps....

Yeah, comming out that flat was a surprise to me Hans, but maybe it'll light a fire under some butts.
and Russ, nmaybe Ovechkin can make you forget the Nationals, he looked awesome last night. I have family and freinds that ice fish and love it like you but it's not for me.

There is a winter storm warning for Southwest Idaho this weekend - which means some of our mountains should start accumulating snow earlier than usual this year. Skiing's gonna be nice...

I'm jealous.
I saw snow in the mountains for the first few days of this week, but it has since melted. I'm dropping off my skiis to be tuned in the next couple of weeks, though. I'm ready to get this started!
