Local Diner Breakfast
I work 5 am to 10 am and every day after i get off work i go to a local diner for breakfast. they have a special every day which consists of two eggs, toast, homefries and a choice of meat . The choices for meat are bacon, sausage, ham or peemeal bacon, I was wondering which would be the best choice?
I know the homefries are probably the worst part of this breakfast, anyone have suggestions of something else i could have that might be a healthier choice to replace the homefries.

Of the meats listed the Ham would be the best. But don't start dancing, it's still a high fat protien and some brands are "PUMPED' a food service term for forcing the tissues to absorb salted water. This adds artificial weight to the protien increasing the profit margin but lowering the quality of the protien. They can add as much as 20% salted water to the weight of a product. Some ham's sodium content per 3 ounce serving is higher than 45% of your total recommended sodium intake for the day.
The potatoes are potentially the heaviest in calories depending on how they are made. Deep fried are bad, pan fried and dripping with delicious butter are worse. You need carbs in your diet to make the machinery run so don't avoid them altogether. Baked potatoes, a sweet potato or red jackets that are baked not fried would be better.
Best bet would be to forgo the spuds, substitute a grainy Kashi like cereal, and if they will allow you to sub a small breast of chicken for the pork that would be better. Good Luck, most small Diners won't let you mess with their menu unless you pay more....

Hi......I can totally relate to this question. We spend alot of time on the road on week-ends and breakfast is usually always in a restaurant. Try to get eggs poached if egg whites aren't possible. Whole grain toast if eating bread (no butter, jam or peanut butter...their p.b's are not natty and have added unhealthy fats and sugar). Spinach or tomatoes instead of homefries. Most often places will give tomatoes instead for no additional charge..... A1 is rigth about ham, but actually the pemeal bacon is even leaner than ham, I'd go with that if possible for meat choice.
My fave is eggs florentine on whole wheat english muffin, hold the hollondaise.....I'll have tomatoes instead of potatoes and enjoy a nice cuppa joe or tea.

skip the diner, buy organic eggs and egg whites, spinach and whole grain bread with some oatmeal and pureed fruit.
in the end it will cost you the same in dollars and much less in insurance when u get older.

thnks for the responses
i know it would be alot healthier to just head home after work and make my own meal, but the diner is close to work which is convenient and the price is right. plus i didnt think it was totally unhealthy since i am having eggs , whole wheat bread and some kind of meat . maybe ill just try to skip the homefries and once i get home have a bowl of kashi go lean
