boxing takes a lot of endurance. kick up your cardio cause 2 minute rounds may seem quick but they take alot out of you. work on flexibility and if you arent doing it already start skipping rope.

Rent Rocky (the first one) for some inspiration. Just go the distance.

Once you've been boxing awhile, I'd add running/wind sprints and some weight training a couple times a week.

Don't wait to "get into shape." Get into boxing and see how much you like it. At the end of the day, you get in shape for boxing by doing boxing.

Having said that, the closest thing you can do to get into shape for boxing are:

1. Increase your anaerobic endurance (which neither regular unning nor weight lifting will provide), and
2. Shadow boxing AND rope skipping for three to four 2-3 minute rounds with 30-60 seconds of rest in between.

For anaerobic endurance and in particular, to develop the ability to go on with insufficient recovery, look up for tabata and other HIIT protocols. Check out Ross Enamait's material - he's pretty much a God when it comes to conditioning for combat sports:

Sledgehammer training:

Work Capacity protocol:

Band Sprints:

I'd suggest you also get his books "Infinite Intensity" and "Never Gymless" if you are serious about training for combat sports.

Tabata Burpees:

For shadow boxing:

Don't make it complicated. For now, keep your hands up, and throw the typical jab-cross combination followed by slipping to either the left or to the right. Do it while keeping the hands up, for 3-minute rounds strictly separated by 60 seconds - if you are not accustomed to that, that is what's going to eat you out in the conditioning department. But that's fine. No one is born with that ability.

But as I said, don't worry about getting in shape. Just go in there and let them get you into shape for boxing.

The longer people spend time "in getting into shape" for a sport, the less likely they'll actually go through it.
