A Long Time Ago....
...I had the same problem. My lifting partner, who happened to be a powerlifting champion told me that I was gripping the bar too hard. If loosening my grip did not correct the problem, he told me to put my thumb along the side of the hand rather than around the bar. Putting my thumb over the bar (alongside my hand) proved to be the solution for me. It does make your control of the bar diminish, but it is better than having a pain that gets worse and worse. The ony time I put my thumb around the bar, was when I was in the upper end of doing pyramid sets, or when doing maxi-lifts.
Another possible cause could be problems in your cervical spine around C6. If your discs are degenerating and starting to collapse, you may be putting pressure on those nerves that feed that area of your hands. You also may be starting to get bone spurs in the nerve channel in the C6 vertebra. See a doctor if the numbness continues. As I have aged, I have experienced increasing numbness in my hands. I have advanced degenerative disc disease as a result of some automobile accidents, and it gets noticably worse with each passing year. Take really good care of your spine. If you are lifting weights, be sure you are lifting correctly, and be sure not to use your back as a fulcrum when lifting. Proper technique is vital in assuring that need.
