Unhappy Sternum Pain...maybe something called Costochondritis?

Hi. I used to be a heavy weightlifter for about 5 years, and once considering going into bodybuilding. I took some time off from bodybuilding because I started developing a really bad sternum pain. More than likely it was from hitting the weights too hard. After seeing my doctor he said it was probably "costochondritis" and advised me to take some time off in order to let it heal on it's own. Several months passed, and it never did. Infact, it got worse. He then injected cortison into my sternum to help ease the pain. That didn't work either, and I think it actually made it worse. I then tried both cold and heat therapy for a while, no luck there either. It has gotten so bad that my sternum now cracks like crazy, and it hurts like hell!! It really feels like my chest ribs are fractured somehow. It cracks by the slightest stretch or a shift in my body.

Has anybody had this problem before? If so, what did you do to treat it? I'm so anxious to get back into the gym but I'm afraid I'll cause more damage. Any advice would be mostly appreciated. Thanks.

From here.

"Costochondritis is an inflammation of the junctions where the upper ribs join with the cartilage that holds them to the breastbone or sternum. The condition causes localized chest pain that you can reproduce by pushing on the cartilage in the front of your ribcage. Costochondritis is a relatively harmless condition and usually goes away without treatment. The cause is usually unknown."

There is a lot more info at that site, ten pages or so.

Since it's a connective tissue thing and not the intercostal muscles, this may do nothing, but I figured I'd throw it out there. My chiropractor did this treatment to me a few time to relieve tightness in the chest at the sternum to help with asthma symptoms. Basically all he did was use the tip of his thumb between the ribs at the sternum, and press down at a right angle to the sternum (not much pressure required at all, you'll feel it when it works). It was like it worked out nodes or kinks in the intercostal muscles.
However, I have to say that it was literally the worst pain I've felt. I have extensive tattoos on one kneecap, ankle, shin, and elsewhere, have broken a hand, have sustained three serious dog bites, have been hit with lots of things and run into plenty more, and I'm telling, this was the worst pain I've ever felt. I would squirm like crazy but once he let up and finished the session it was a tremendous relief to tension I hadn't even realized was there. It was also an instant aid to my posture after each session.
That of course, may do nothing for you, but worth a try. You can do it to yourself but it's not really possible to get the same stretch in your chest you would have while lying down and having someone else do it.

You probably started it by bouncing the bar off your sternum doing heavy benching....alot of guys do this, to their dismay later when they develop this condition. What happens is, the cartilage segments kind of separate slightly from the rib bones near their insertons at the sternum. We treat with shots, too...but my suggestion to you is NSAIDS, REST (no benching or incline dumbell presses for 4-6 weeks and "lidoderm patches" (prescription) plastered over the area every day. They are non-narcotic, just lidocaine gel-backed patches that anaesthetize locally....hopefully "numbing you up for 12-16 hrs...good luck!

Thanks 'Presa Canario' for the advice. I've actually considering going to see a chiropracter, but I was always afraid of them doing more harm than good. Plus, the idea of someone cracking my bones kinda' freaks me out. But I will definitely consider doing so.

Thanks 'Liz'. Your're absolutely right! I did use to bounce the bar off my chest. Totally unecessary, I realize now. I was actually persrcibed some pretty heavy duty NSAIDS called Ketoprofen. I got off of them quickly because I heard about some serious side effects, plus it caused me to have some digestive problems. As for rest, I've gotten plenty of that because I haven't worked out in over a year now. (Very depressing) I purposely took some time off because I wanted it to heal, even if it took several months. But, I will definitely look into the "lidoderm patches" and see if it works. If you have anymore suggestions I'd love to hear about them.

Thanks again guys.
