That sounds like an impingement of a nerve.

Most injuries that occur during working out are due to some sort of muscle incoordination.

In short, warm-up, stretch, and make sure form is correct. And please, please, please, don't roll your shoulders.

Ever shrug when you say "I don't know?" There you go.

You CAN bend forward at the hips about 20 degrees of flexion to hit a lower portion of the trapezius. Just use lighter weight. Your lambrum will love you later.

see this thread: shrugs and shoulders

The second post (by old fart) links to the t-nation article, which is VERY GOOD, though way more detailed than I need. Just get the form pointers from it. It changed the way I do shrugs, and my shoulders and traps can tell the difference.

The rest of that thread has some more tips, too.

If you want a science explaination, I can give it, but it's bad because of 3 muscles.

It's not that rolling the shoulders in and of itself is bad. It's the tendency to drop them when the scapulae are adducted. This puts a huge strain on the glenohumoral(sp?) joint, which is commonly called the rotator cuff.

There is a proper way to do it, but it's like the squat. Some ignorant people will tell you not to do squats. However, they are one of the most efficient exercises IF DONE CORRECTLY.
