Question Injury (Wrist) Strap Question.

Hello,

I began having weird feeling in my wrist, around nackel area and inside, hmm hard to explain.

Anyway i had it first in August 07, i stopped exercising between Sept - Nov and after rest its was gone, now its back again. it doesn't bother me much but its a discomfort.

I think it all started from me doing 'Dumbbell Curls' - I was knew to it and i think i used more weight than i should of.

Anyway i want to buy a wrist strap, but really know almost 0% about them, whats the best product, brand? Any recommendations?

Thanks

I don't really know anything about wrist straps, other than using athletic tape

it sounds like you might have tendonitis (sp?) in your wrist, I had this awhile back and needed physically therapy and visiting a chiropractor a couple times, worked well

"Nackel"? I don't know what this is.

I always think of wrist straps as being for helping your grip - just a simple strap with a loop on one end. There are several straps that also have a brace on them - while I haven't used them, I thought that the brace was there to keep the wrist in proper alignment on a vertical lift (ie, bench press) - if that's true, I doubt they'd help too much for the horizontal plane (curls).

You might want to look around at some gymnastics forums - the gymnasts that I know always have the best access to bizarre braces.

Tendonitis is usually an over-use injury - if it just "happened" during a lift, it's probably some tendon damage. Not that there's alot of difference in rehab: I've spent about half of this year on the injury list because of tendonitis (you'd think that 3 months off would do it, but sometimes you need more - and you need to work on strengthening the tendons when you get back, and not just go back to lifting: otherwise you'll just get the same injury again).

yes it does sound as if you used 2 much weight for your wrists to handle. in the very beginning of my weightlifting many many years ago i had the same problem. the only method i found that helped was strengthening your wrists and forearms then over time you wont have the problem. tape helped me with my discomfort but in the end it was the forearm work that fixed the problem. dont do any palms down curls untill your wrists can take it. use hammer method more untill your wrists get stronger with plenty of forearm work. a brace will only be a crutch and you will still have the problem untill you properly strengthen whats needed. good luck.

Hey Vadimo,
Are you sure about wrist straps and maybe needing wrist wraps? I use wraps on my wrists when I curl, bench, and back except when doing legs. But I use them for support , just like when I doing squats and going heavy, I use knee wraps which are longer. Straps on the other hand are mainly used for when heavy weight in your hand or hands are on the verge of failure such as cable pull downs your able to get a couple more reps then if without them the grip from your hands give out sooner. As for the best product, there are so many brands now I couldn't tell you which one is better, I've used no name brands that have lasted longer than name brands (Weider, World Gym). I hope this helps you out some. Good Luck!

Thanks you all for replays and many suggestions.

Maybe i have light spring?

The bottom line is:
I think i'll take off at least 3 weeks and once the wrist feels fine, i'll focus on the straightening the wrist. I think its the weakest place in my upper body so far. I dedicated too much time to shoulders, triceps and biceps.

I'll also buy tape or the straps for both wrists. I guess i just have to wait and see now.

Thanks

Hello i'm back and just wanted to say that my wrist is now fine.

I purchased wrist strap, went to my local doctor, he examined my wrist and didn't find any damage, he suggested that its muscle sprint and i should try strengthening by light exercising. So i did (also supporting with my wrist strap) and results were great, after 5 weeks the wrist discomfort gone.

During these 5 weeks, i set myself back on heavy exercises and dedicated my time to wrist/forearms. Also during that i realized that to make my hands strong and look handsome i should fortify my other part like shoulder, triceps, back muscles and of course forearms.

My Current results are; my arms feel stronger, they look worked out and i'm slowly getting back into heavy weights and it feels much better now.

Lesson learned and new techniques adopted.

Thanks everyone.
