Default Motorcycle accident..

Hey everyone,

Haven't been on in a while and its good to see a lot of familiar faces!

I was involved in a motorcycle accident Decemeber 15 2007. I had an open tibula/fibula fracture in my left leg, a fractured left femur, and a shattered left elbow, and I'm a lefty too which sucks! But lucky to even be alive!

I've got a titanium rod in my shin, thigh, and a titanium plate in my elbow/arm area (about a 6inch scar from the bottom of my tricep to the middle of my forearm) but I could give a F less about the scar, like I said I'm lucky to be alive.

I'm more concered of the repercussions. I'm 25 yrs old, and have an inhouse P.T, and on my road to recovery. I wanted to know if anyone has had any of the same injuries and how they recovered and how their range of motion is, strength in the gym, how long it took for 100% recovery, and any long term side effects known.

Any information would be greatly apperciated!

Thanks,
Danny.

I'm glad you survived, dannymax! I work with lots of people who aren't as lucky as you. May sustain permanent neurological damage such as brain injuries or spinal cord injuries. Were you wearing a helmet?

As for recovery, trust your therapists! Maintaining good range of motion is critical early on. Otherwise you could develop significant scar tissue which will limit your ROM in the future. It will take quite a while to return to lifting heavy weights. What is your weight bearing status? I assume the left leg is non-weight bearing. You will only be able to advance very slowly and must maintain your precautions at all times.

Since you are young, you stand a good chance of returning to a full workout routine, however, it could take many months, maybe up to a year. The only ones who really know this are your therapists and doctors. You should consult them with these questions. They can monitor your progress and take your goals into consideration.

Tooncesthecat,

Thanks brotha, and yes I was wearing a helmet. Doc said I would of been dead if I wasn't.

I am working with an inhouse PT twice a week at the moment which is going well. I'm currently in a wheelchair and can't bare any weight on my left foot (doctors orders) I personally haven't tried yet, cause I don't want to fuck anything up since its only been a month since the accident.

Thank you and I really apperciate ur response!
Danny

Definitely don't try to put weight on that leg until you are told you can. If you screw up the bone now, you may be screwed forever. Just be patient!

hey danny i know what your going through, i was put through similar injuries while stationed at camp pendelton. it took roughly a year for me too walk normally and by the end of 2 years i was running and doing everything i used to be able to. my injuries are different slightly leg and ankle was same but i sustained some spinal damage from mine. elbows chipped pretty noticably but still working fine. have faith and work hard with the physical therapy and dont give up. dont even accept any negative feedback from the docs saying you wont do this and you wont be able to do that. i was told many things i would never be able to do again and i being a stubborn marine at the time refused to accept any of it. with persaverance and willpower i made a phenomenal recovery. you will to if you put your mind to it!
