Default out time for a hernia?

Suppose I had a hernia, how long do you think I would be unable to train?

This past saturday I hit the gym (shoulders, tricep,ABS) and during my ab exercises I tried some new exercises, hopeing to hit the obliques alittle harder and bring out that money maker muscle.

I didn't feel anything uncomfortable during my workout, however the next day when I wokeup my abs/sides were very sore and I thought this was just a result of the intense abdominal, well now its monday night and the sides and abs have felt much better, however there is sharp pain on the right side of my groin near the very bottom of where the money maker muscle would be asuming I had it. The left side feels fine..

I'm very scared I have a hernia and if I do have one I do not want to miss my workouts. How long would I be out of the gym? How could I avoid muscle loss and strength loss while I'm out? How do they fix it? Is it painful?

I have an appointment tommorow morning first thing, so I hope its just something else less serious.

Oh yeah, today I did go to the gym to do chest and tri, and I didn't have any discomfort or pressure in my groin, however picking up my 3 year old nephew and wrestling around with him did cause slight pain, also the girlfriend hoped on top of me just horsing around and I felt much more discomfort

Well supposing you do have a hernia, there is no self treatment you can do to correct or fix it. I believe the doctor/ sports specialist will have to operate to repair it. The "normal" average time for recovery is about in the range of 5-8 weeks. I have posted some articles below on hernias in general (types, treatment, etc).

Here is an article from Wiki about Hernias in general:
Hernia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And another article from eMedicineHealth:

yes it definitely will need surgical repair if it is indeed a hernia. it is possible to still function in your everday life activitys even with a hernia. my brother had his gallbladder removed quite some time ago and eventually herniated around the surgery sight. he went for a little over a year before having surgery to correct it.
on the other hand when you get a hernia there is a noticable tear in the muscle tissue sometimes resulting in intestinal bulge, at the very least you should see some sort of disfigure in the area. not necessarily a bulge either.

Ya, I just was scared and I didn't want it to be something worse.

The pain extended down to near my... well, favorite muscle and I just didn't want to chance it.

FYI - one way to prevent hernias in the groin area (inguinal hernia) is to strengthen the abdominal muscles around the area. Lower ab exercises, like hanging leg raises, can help you do this.
