does this sound like a pulled muscle or a sprain?
a few days ago, i was jumping rope, then suddenly, i felt this sharp pain in the calf area. the calf hurts the worst when i get up from a chair or when i step down from something.
yesterday it started to feel a little better, then while i was behind the shed at my dad's ranch, i heard this rattling sound, and just a few feet away from me (i could've step on it) was this rattler going into the weeds. i ran the heck out of there and hurt my calf even worse.

A strained muscle or tendon is a "pulled" muscle or tendon by definition. A sprain is a similar injury but it involves ligaments. If you are feeling the sharp pain in the calf area, it is almost certainly a muscle strain. Best advice I can give is to not run, jump, train calves, or do anything to put more stress on the calves.

When you made your emergency escape from the rattler did you feel it pop? If so, is there bruising?

them rattlers are kinda scary i will add! i came face to face with one last year when the wife wanted to hunt some morrel mushrooms. im unsure if i spelt the type of mushroom right but she told me they were very exspensive so we decided to search for them. sure enough we were on our second 12 gal garbage bag and came accross this huge rattler with 10 rattles on it. unfortunately i shot it since living in the country i rarely go from home without a sidearm on.
i know there are prob a few activists saying why shoot it, but since i have cattle i dont want to risk ruining a cow over a snake, besides i finally got to try and taste what a rattle snake tasted like cooked. as ive heard before chicken! actually wasnt that bad.
sorry 4 hijacking your thread but it brought back to many memories. back on subject rice it.

"finally got to try and taste what a rattle snake tasted like cooked"
what i want to know is, how did you take the poison out of the rattlesnake before eating it, or does the cooking take out the poison?

the poison is located in the skull back behind the teeth attached to them via a sack filled with venom wich you cut the head off of the snake and no poison thereafter to deal with.

Icy hot, calf stretchs and ideally self-applied myofascial release with a foam roller or a 4" PVC pipe. That will do the trick.

If you are just starting weight training, I strongly suggest you get a copy of Mark Rippetoe's "Starting Strength, 2nd Ed"
no, been lifting for a long time, it just ironic that a wimpy thing like jumping rope puts me out of commission when one would think that the weightlifting should've done it.
book sound like a good read, though.

Maybe this had a lot to do with me spraining my calf: When I was jumping rope, I was wearing slippers. Could that have anything to do with it? Plus the heel is coming apart on the left foot slipper, and it's the left calf that I hurt.

Probably not. It was just one of those things that you probably didn't do anything wrong, but it was just bad luck.

How long does a sprained calf take to heal?: It's been a few weeks, and although I can walk pretty good without pain, it still hurts if I try a calf exercise.
The only leg work I've been getting these past few weeks is walking and using the Tony Little Gazelle glider.

Linda, I looked this up and it looks worth a try. I take it you have experience with it?
