Ok so there is this girl that I've been talkin to for awhile. We were put in the same group in class and so we just talked and stuff. Well, that wednesday in the last week of the quarter before our four week break, I asked her if she would like to go out on a date. She said she couldn't this week cuz she was leaving the next day to go on vacation with her family.

I then said well maybe when we get back from break we could. She replied with a "maybe". Then I told her ok and wished her well on her break.

Now I like her and want to see where this goes, but four weeks is along time and when we get back I honestly don't know how to approach the situation from there. Am I reading too much into this maybe? Should I just go for it again?

Considering that I have never texted (unless you consider emails to friends during the day or this forum texting) I can't imagine asking someone out that way.

You're obviously still pretty young. There is an old saying, "There are plenty of fish in the sea." Don't stress over this fish. Next time you see her, if you are still interested, strike up a conversation asking how her break went... how was her vacation... etc...

But face to face is leaps and bounds better than texting. But then again... I have never texted... so I dunno... maybe girls' knees quiver when they get a text message saying "i like u wanna go out"

1. Do not, ever, ever ask someone out over e-mail or text message. Be a man and do it in person, or at worse over the phone.

2. If you can't get that opportunity, then you let it go. If it's for you, it will be there for you. Be a man and don't freak out.

3. You don't know this person. This is not the love of your life or someone you have been dating for months or years. Four weeks is nothing, and if you can't wait four miserable months, I suggest you forget about her. She does not need the aggravation of having to face someone so desperate that he couldn't wait for four weeks for someone he barely knows.

4. In the next four weeks, use it for yourself, do other shit, relax, workout, meet other people. Forget about her. You never dated her, and she isn't your great friend anyways, it was just an acquaintance you met in class. No more, no less. Let fate decide if you guys run into each other.

This actually supports a theory that I already held--text messaging signifies the end of humanity.

My theory goes as such:

The upcoming generation is so reliant on text messaging to communicate that they now, as wildstang said, actually text full conversations instead of talking. As this continues and grows, younger people will lose all interpersonal skills. People will become so poor at face-to-face communication that the end result will be a drop in human sexuality and thus a decline in the species.

This is what I've noticed -- first, yes, I am hijacking the thread. Deal with it. Second, a disclaimer -- I text like a 14 year old Japanese girl. I IM (instant message for the older generation) often. My facebook updates regularly, even while at work (or, especially while at work). In other respects I am considered an upstanding adult.

Texting won't cause us to follow the dinosaurs. It's become something of a joke amongst the guys when we're out that when 12:30 or so rolls around we start getting the "what ru up2" messages coming in (also for the older generation -- this is often how the liquored-up young ladies of today ask for male companionship; i.e., the "booty call"). It's almost a little embarrassing (note the use of almost in that sentence, though). So some of us are certainly getting action from the text. Of course, it should always be mentioned that if you're looking for Ms. Right, you'll want to stay as far as humanly possible away from the 12:30 texters.

I guess my next point (the fourth? fifth?) is that -- having grown up in a pre-text, and practically pre-cell phone age (now in my late 20's) -- I actually had to learn how to talk to girls face-to-face. And take them out on non-group dates. When I'm out with college girls today (don't judge me), I'm constantly amazed by how easy it is (don't judge them, either). It's like a guy has never actually talked to them.

So I guess that's my last point -- just talk to girls like they're normal people (tragically, one often finds out they rarely are), and they'll be oddly grateful. Whenever I see the young (male) kids out there wearing their abercrombie and their oddly 70's-style shaggy hair, I just want to shake them by the shoulders, grab their face, and yell all Godfather-like "be a man!" Of course, they're eventually competing for the same girls I am, though, so in the interests of self-interest I let them act like the raging douchebags that they want to be.

So that's my best advice to OP - just be a man. Sure, it's scary to ask someone out and risk rejection, but that kind of fear -- living for it, embracing it, and dealing with it -- will serve to bring out some certifiably bad-ass qualities in you. Those qualities, be it independence, a clear mind, logic, self-fortitude, or whatever, will be viewed very positively by the fairer gender.

Of course, I still can't get over an ex, so all advice I give should probably be taken under advisement. This one's golden, though -- "the best way to get over a girl is by getting under another one" is, in fact, a total lie, presumably started by a condom manufacturer. Or someone who enjoys watching misery.
