Treadmill Vs Track running
I am no workout guru or anything, but i do try to keep relatively fit. I found myself putting on a few lbs over the cold months, so i purchased a treadmill so i could have time around my work schedule to try, and keep some fat off. The treadmill definantly is nice to have when you have limited time, and it is a great workout. Here's the thing. Its warmer now, and there is no way i can run my treadmill times at a track. I cant even run the same distance i do on the treadmill. I was wondering why this is? The treadmill did succeed in keeping the weight off, but as far as gaining any cardio, or stamina i feel that i lost some. Is it normal to be able to run on a treadmill easier?

Yep. The machine makes the ground move for you. On a track or street you have to push yourself forward, whereas on the mill you just have to move your legs. I'm the same way. I break a sweat on the treadmill but I get a much better workout on the streets, which I prefer. But there is nothing wrong with using a treadmill sometimes. I don't like it all the time but I use them when staying at a hotel or something. Sometimes they are nice for babewatching. You can go to the gym and run on a mill while watching hot sweaty fitness babes workout on the bikes or elliptical machines for a change of scenery.

The outside air is nice and so are trees and birds and stuff, but nothing quite beats a good sweaty fitness babe for inspiration

yes, candyman has it right. i used to run exclusively on a treadmill, but now i run exclusively outside (not by choice, though...). i can (or at least i feel i can) run forever on a treadmill since the 'ground' is propelling itself. don't fret though, as a cardio workout is better than none at all.

The Real McCoy
Candyman is right....
There is no substitue for the real thing.
I agree treadmill is better than nothing,
I can't think of ANY Exercise "shortcut" that really works
like what it is supposed to replace.
There is no substitute for training & sweat....

Can't stand the treadmill because of the boredom. Looking at girls's ass and boobs is nice but I go to the gym fot the workout not babewatching. Luckily, there's a park near my house that has a 1.5 mile running trail. It's awesome because you are always going up or down on the trail, hardly any flat area.

i concure. I cant stand a treadmill, its to boring. I run aroudn a 1.5 mile path around a lake, run 2 laps, you got a nice little cardio in for the day. Plus its warm out and hot chicks are also running, you can pace yourself with themand stare at their ass, (like you all dont do it).

I can't tell you how many people I've seen fall off a threadmill because they weren't paying attention.
If you're wanting a good workout, you'd better keep your eyes off the sweaty babes and watch what you're doing.

The best way to increase your cardio endurance, so you can run more efficiently outside, is to do interval running.
I love the treadmill, but only because I am constantly changing it up. To just run on a treadmill is so boring. A 40 min. workout would look like this:
at a 2.50% incline
3.5mph walk 4 min.
3.5 mph 1 min. each side - side to side shuffles
3 min. run at 5.8 mph
3.5 mph 1 min. each side - side to side shuffles
3.7mph walk 1 min.
That's the warm up.
Now for the run:
6 mph run 1 min.
8 mph run 1 min.
5.5mph jog 1 min.
3.5 mph walk 1 min.
I do this for 20 minutes.
My cool down is
3.5mph 30 sec. each side - side to side shuffles
5.8mph 1 min.
3.5mph 30 sec. each side - side to side shuffles
5.8mph 1 min.
3.5mph 1 min. each side - side to side shuffles
5.8mph 1 min.
3.7mph walk 3 min.
3.5mph walk 1 min.
3.0mph walk 1 min.
Done and sweating like a cow. I lost 5lbs in 3 weeks by incorporating this into my workout. I started by doing it 2x a week in addition to regular running and weight traing 3x a week.

So I guess you're one of the sweaty babes keeping these guys from getting a good workout, huh? LOL
And, guys, when you post your comments, remember that there are women on this site also. Let's try to keep things respectful.

When I first started doing cardio, I was running on a track at Bally's.
I now use the treadmill since the gym I'm at now doesn't have a track.
I have to admit that I do miss the track, but you work with what you have.
The treadmill is pretty boring so I listen to my Ipod while running.
It's still a bit hard for me to use a treadmill because I have to concentrate on the treadmill so much so I don't go flying off.
I guess I haven't gotten used to it yet.

Molly actually has a pretty good idea, using a type of interval training, in more ways than one. Not only is interval type training better for fat burning, it keeps things from getting too boring because you're constantly having to watch the time.
And, don't feel bad, I haven't fallen off the threadmill yet, but I have slipped off the stair climber.
