side of the left knee pain???????
I started running 5 weeks ago and so far so good. Last night out of no where I started feeling this pain in the side of my knee. The pain is not inside of the knee, I can actually touch it feels like this muscle on the side of my knee is sore or I don’t know what. The pain started really smoothly so I kind of kept going for another mile before stopping. The pain increase very rapidly when I began walking on the treadmill. How can I stop this pain??? .
Some descriptions that might help to your answers:
I’m 6’1 190lbs
I trying to loose some fat
I run around half an hour 5 days a week, after that I always do some bicycle or cross for some 20 more min.
Never had any knee injuries or pain before
Although I just starting running more frequently 5 weeks ago I had always been a somewhat running person with a minimum of 4 times a month.

I will love to attach u an image, but Im not that good with computers. I dont know how to do it. But from the image that you sent me i can tell you than none of those places is the one with the pain. I will say that right where the patella in the altitud of the knee but all the way to the outer part of the knee. Being my right knee, the altitud where that patella is you have to go all the way to the right side (i dont even know that is a part of the knee or a muscle)

I had this problem before and it was due to tension in the iliotibial band (ITB). The band runs from your glute down the side of your leg to the outside of the knee. When it tightens, it basically inhibits the use of your glute and hamstring. I found that by alot of stretching of the ITB, quads and hip flexors, and some glute strenthening, such as single leg squats, the problem went away. Here's a few ITB stretches: http://www.nismat.org/ptcor/itb_stretch/ , and make sure you stretch your quads also before running.

ide say to start off go with what onetimeok said. Chances are you have a tight IT band. I suffer from this. I stretch every day. it will take time to get it loose again. what type of pain is it. Sharp or aching?

Good call onetimeok. ITB tightness is fairly common in runners, good link as well.

factors can be levels of ground if you run outdoors, foot alignment, foowear, lack of strengthening and conditioning the stabilizing muscles.

Yes, ITB. I've had it. Got it trying to run up hills and increase mileage too quickly. Hurts. Stretches and rest, stretches and rest.

MIGvilla -> I also had a similar problem a few years ago. I was ten when I started running and never had any major problems before I reached my 30s. Started runnning a lot on tarmac, 2-4 times a week, 60+ mins and got pain in the same area as you did. The pain was caused by shoes starting to get worn out combined with pronation/supination. See the link below.
And don´t forget to visit a store with a treadmill with that in mind so that you get shoes that are perfectly balanced for your feet.

I have the same issue. Lots of stretching, deep tissue massage, and icing after workouts helps me. Also it helps to stretch warm muscles.
